I think that it isn't actually a matter of trust, but rather of
respect of personal liberty.

One can count on Bolger to say whether (or not) he sees a change to
his design to be an improvement. And Bolger is not too proud to admit
when people *do* improve his designs.

I think that Bolger respects a person's rights to spend their money
(and spend their life) for things as pointless as boats.

What he wrote about Alfred Johnson and Centennial pertains here:
"These days there seems to be a kind of morbid horror of death, which
I deplore, because I think it corrupts social judgement. As Socrates
pointed out, there's absolutely no evidence that dying is bad for you.
If someone wants to do something risky, like going to sea in a very
cheap boat, I don't feel that I have either a right or an obligation
to try to stop him. In ancient times, what some now call "pointless
stunts" --- feats of skill, courage, and endurance --- were performed
as dedications to the gods, though there's a reluctance to put it in
so many words."

I am curious about exact sequence of events that lead to the demise of
LUN, the open hatch is a clue and perhaps the capsize, though that
could have happened afterwards. And, looking at the shape of LUN, if
you were to fall out it, there seems no easy way to climb back in.

Here is a lines plan of LUN

and a FREE!SHIP model of LUN here

This boat and the project was frustrating to Bolger. First, as
described in BWAOM (IIRC), the hatch put on the boat was not as
designed. PCB felt that it would have much more drag than his design.
Second. as described in MAIB, the boat was refitted for a major
adventure within hailing distance of Gloucester, but his advice was
not solicited. He thought they made some mistakes that he could have
helped them prevent.

PCB can be pernickety about the details of his designs. He hates when
details that he has worried over are ignored in the realization. On
the other hand, with an experienced client, he often leaves details to
them if he trusts their judgement.

Peter
Thanks, Interesting Links, Interesting Boat, Interesting Adventure,
Interesting Person. Misfortune will meet us all at some time. I can
only hope to chose the place if not the time.

At least he took a compass. (proa_ file joke). Sorry for the cross post.

This is probably familar to you, but it was new to me:
