Re: [bolger] Re: Early Christmas Present
True. My U.S. centric view blinds me to those of you in other parts of
the world. Shame on me.....
I have run the perl script on a portion of the email messages. I'll explore
that more today. I'm just about finished dividing the messages into folders
by year.
But, I'm sure that we could work out the cost if need be. As far as
searching them, there are tools. If you use windows, you can use the windows
search tool. If you run unix, you can use find and grep. On windows you
also have:
http://desktop.google.com/
or
http://toolbar.msn.com/desktop/results.aspx?FORM=PCHP&q=
I'm sure there are more.
The files themselves are about 106MB (without html). Here is a sample of

Gregg, you say on your web page that your schooner "planes", with bursts

the semi-displacement category?
BTW, what is the sail area on the thing?

make them fairly small. Can you check how large they would be then? I

How would an average user (i.e. no local mailserver running) search a
bunch of local HTML files, each one containing one mail? (Mhonarc's
search box relies on a server)
I'd prefer raw mail files, broken down by year, zipped. That should
make them fairly small. Can you check how large they would be then? I
might be able to host them, if there is a need.
But then there is still the question of copyrights....

Running the script is no problem. I have run it already on a subset of the
archive. My issue was that it could not index all of the emails together
(to many files). However, I can split them up by year into separate
directories, then run the script. Disadvantage would be that the files
would not be all together.....
I would be open to copying the files to a cd and mailing them. I would just

I would be open to copying the files to a cd and mailing them. I would just
want enough to cover postage and the cd cost which would be minimal.

Might I suggest that given our limited audience, this info might be much
more easily accessible if you, or some other good soul, offered, initially,
to sell the CDs, at a cost that covers the occasional inconvenience, like
5-8 bucks? After a time, the thing would propagate itself with no further
effort (Hey, I'd like a copy of that archive CD, can anyone accommodate me
off list? etc.). - Bill

What advantages do you see in an uploaded and HTML'ized archive,
compared to Yahoo's archives?
There are a number of eMail programs (clients) that can handle raw
eMail format. For users of such programs to have the whole mail file
locally would have the advantage that local searches are faster (and
can be more specific) than Yahoo's online searches.
To make download of a large file easier, you might consider beaking it
down into e.g. yearly mail files.

This email archive is what I had in mind:
http://www.hort.net/lists//aroid-l/dec05/
The index and threading links were created by this tool:
http://www.mhonarc.org/.This format makes browsing a lot easier (IMO).
As far as yahoo's search mechanism, it is way to laborious to search as it
only searches a small number (relative to the size of the message base) of
messages at a time.

search feature is so awkward that it is effectively unusable. Another
problem is that for some unknown reason, Yahoo is opaque to the Google
search spiders, although there was a past time when a Google search
could return individual messages from the Bolger group message
archive, that feature ended about two years back.

using the html tool will create threading of the messages. The tool does a
pretty good job of that. As far as searching, one would have to download
then to your local drive and use your pc's search tools.
raw email, pure ascii message with all of the header fields and the message
body. I can post a sample tonight.
Thanks for the link to the sites, I'll pick one out and try it tonight.

I have in my possession all of the bolger group messages from this groups
inception (nearly 48,000). I would like to make them available to all that
are interested, however, the file is ~70 MB and is to large to upload to any
free server that I know of. Does anyone have enough server space available
that they could host this file?
The messages are currently in raw email format. I am going to attempt to
use some software to html'ize them, this will make the file even larger.....
