Re: Shallow crusing on the ICW

Yet another thot on this: I have a bagful of nylon fairleads, little ones costing about 20 cents
each. I'll be using them as the washers under the screws holding the top edge of the lexan
windows on my Birdwatcher II. They will hold the bottom of a full length, standing headroom
tent in place while the boat is anchored. Hooks would work on this but I plan to put a line of
loops at the bottom of the tent so that each loop will go through its own fairlead and through
the end of the loop from the previous fairlead. I seem to recall that Ashley's book of knots
shows a Dutchman's overcoat closure that works like a colonial-era zipper, ie. undo the last
loop from its button and pull the whole zipper apart. Ashley describes this much more
clearly, eh?

Two things to bear in mind when cruising on the SE coast/ICW are bugs and
humidity--neither of which disappear in winter.

You may not need netting in the winter, but you may need it and if you don't
have it, it will be a miserable night. Since you can count on humidity,
your bedding should be one of the fast drying synthetics; a damp sleeping
bag is also a recipe for a miserable night. Been there, done that.

Be hard to beat one of Bolger's glass cabin sharpies
for this kind of service, screened in. We had my
Topaz down in the Flamingo/Cape Sable area of south
Florida last summer, and she was a great pleasure with
the screens in place. Getting to her was the problem.
We think we have 'skeeters in Delaware, but thos
mangrove mosquitos are a different breed of bug.

Buy the mosquito netting first -- not maybe -- and
then worry about the boat! We sailed warm and shallow
down there and moored in the lee of mangrove islands.
One night the wind died and every bug with an appetite
showed up. Horror show. It was like the bugs in the
Canadian north that get so thick you can scarcely
breath. And of course, I wasn't wearing my parka and
mukluks -- in fact I was showing a maximum traget
area. You'd know all about the north I guess.

Happy Holidays, Bolgeristas!

I have given some thought to the what to build on the ICW. In 03 I was
mobilized (I am an Alaska National Guardsman) and our mobilization
station was in Ft Stewart GA. I did a lot of flying on the coast there
from Jacksonville Fla to Charleston. I am from Southeast Alaska so I am
used to intricate shore lines and numerous bays and inlets and creeks. I
was astonished at the hundreds of miles of uninhabited coastline
available for exploration. There are more little nooks and crannies to
explore there than could be done in several years. I know that the water
is really shallow so whatever boat you used would have to be shallow
draft. Another issue would be bugs, but I think that they probably
aren't so bad in late winter, early spring. The winter in this area is
like a nice summer day in Nome AK where I spent 20 years so weather that
stops the locals wouldn't be that much of an issue. I am still amazed
that I had never heard of this vast, what looked to me unused cruising
area.

Fritz Funk has shown that a Sneakeasy can go in as shallow water as a
jet boat if you tilt the engine up between the transom extensions, sort
of like a poor mans tunnel drive. My thought would be to haul the frames
for a Sneakeasy down there, find or rent a workspace and throw a hull
together. Build the canvas top per the plans with maybe the addition of
mosquito netting. Throw in your gear and head out.

All the electronic maps both BSB and ENC's for the US are free now.

Hi all,

Merry (Non-PC) Christmas and a Happy Bolger New Year to all!

Bin' up to my ears in Rust Check lately, it was a GREAT year! Cut me
and I'll bleed pink, then patch myself up wi' a little West Sys.
(feeble attempt to be somewhat on topic) and Fast Hardener.

Bo'sun Bruce Hector
Headin' south after New Years and wonderin' what to build on the ICW
this year.

Not takin' that card Lenihan, but just might invite his newest pesky
crew, she's far to sweet to waste on a St. Lawrence Pyrate of his ilk,
better to waste on one of my sterling character.
