Thanks to all who responded to this plea, and I am
writing to Mr. Bolger hisownself about what I'm
planning and I'll include something that Doug's
response has suggested.
I awake in the night with visions of mast boots
dancing through my head -- which beats the heck out of
visions of sugarplums, I've got to tell you -- even if
it is Christmas Eve. Doug, there's lots of room UNDER
the coaming on Birdwatcher, so why not a clamp-on
mastboot extending over to the offcentreboard case to
drain the rain and spray off into the case instead of
letting it ran right down to the maststep? I can't
for the life of me think why that wouldn't work a
treat.

ps. I'm going to google Michelak + Cormorant to see
if I can find something on his modded partners.---

Yahoo! DSL Something to write home about.
Just $16.99/mo. or less.

Two thoughts:
- boats usually don't sail on an even keel, so the off-center yaw torque
effects you are concerned about are probably lost in the noise of sea slop
and main sheet tension
- with proper craftsmanship, amazingly fragile looking joints can be
remarkably strong -- witness some of the frail looking spindled rocking
chairs.

I have a BW 1. I used the Michelak modification at the partners.
That is, vertical rods in the partners either side of the mast and
lashing to hold the mast in, very simple. The mast in BW 1 is in-line
with the centerboard case. This is fine in fair weather. If you want
to cover the slot for protection from the rain, you will want the BW 2
mast set-up with the mast outside the coaming. It is tough to rig a
slot cover around the mast when it is inside the coaming.

In the WB update they wrote, "The mast now stands in, and drains
into, the centerboard trunk." Yet when the plans were finalized this
was not shown. So it may be of benefit to find out why they did not
follow through on that idea.
You might also want to contact the other builders who are listed in
the Links section of this group. They are all very helpful and
proactive folks.
Birdwatcher could probably benefit from it's own discussion group at
some point. I think the Micro series could as well. (I would be
willing to co-moderate a Micro group but have not the smarts to head
one up.)

I'm about to commit myself on the question of mast position in my Birdwatcher II and would
like to put the mast step in line with the end of the offcentreboard to lessen the moment arm
of the offcentre of effort from the rig.
The designed gate at the partners doesn't look like a good mechanical solution (in addition
to being fussy). If the board and the step are in line, I'll be able to put a metal fitting under
the deck and hold the mast in place using clips like a ski boot, or even just bolts extending
through the coaming with the nuts on the side, of course. I anticipate being able to reduce
the coaming cutout depth from six inches to one inch or perhaps two.
Any BW folks out there with thots to share?
