I tried to get my friend Leander to use simple wooden "cleat halves"
lashed Wharram-style rather than the latches. He wouldn't go for it. I
don't follow your idea about tubes, but chances are if I did, I would
think you are taking too much trouble.

Getting the hinges made was one of Leander's biggest troubles. He
finally had them made by a back woods country welder up in Maine. All
the metal shops around here wanted hundreds of $$$.

Ironically, Gary Blankenship's pivoting keel broke down and he chose
to lock the pieces in place so that it functions just as you imagine.

But with I60, the geometry of the pivot arm motion is a brain teaser
for sure. [if my memory serves me...] The trick is that there are two
arms, [actually three, I recall] with cleverly located points for the
top pivots, so that at it lifts up it also rotates to remain on the
horizontal plane. The forward arm is on the centerline of the hull and
holds most of the weight, and the after arm [two pieces, port and
starboard] controls the attitude.

Draw a picture of the wing piece in the up and in the down position,
then using a pencil and compass cast circles and you can find the
positions where the pivots must be located to work.
Looking at the Insolent Schooner drawing the one point I noticed was that the Winged center board was on a pivot and I could not see how the winged part would lay flat against the hull when retracted. The only way that I can see it working is if it was to slide up and down and not pivot. Like a lot of folks I am taken by this design and would love to see one on the water.
I have purchased the plans for the Folding Schooner and plan to start the build this year, but first I have to complete a warram cat .
For the Folding Schooner I plan to use stainless firedoor hinges and also not to use Bolgers latch on the chines but to use Wharram style tie down straps going inside tubes with o rings to seal the tubes where they join Alex
