Re: [bolger] Re: FastBrick and Diablo Updates

Please keep us (or at least me) posted. It looks like your Robote will
be in the water long before my row boat. I still have to do major
rebuilding of the 3 car garage at my new used place and move my shop
into it from storage in the basement before I can start building.

That sounds like a good idea that I wish I'd thought of, but it's too
late for that kind of surgery to the foam sandwich now.

My boat is long enough that the oars, yard, and boom do not reach the
aft bulkhead. I'm attempting to devise some other means of holding
them securely when not in use, but it looks like it will take some
trial and error.

Did you order the larger size sail? If so, that would mean that
Duckworks has the dimensions on hand, right? That might save me some
trouble - thanks!

Purely conjecture. My hope is that the deep vee of the Robote hull
will keep my 50 lb. dog more less on the centerline, but I admit that
the whole exercise may be mostly swimming instead of rowing. The
trials will be done in very shallow water! There's no way I'd try
him in the Toto canoe - we'd be overboard in the first few seconds.

John,
Your Fast Brick looks great. My ten foot Fast Brick is at about the
same stage. I have the bottom painted with a two part epoxy paint and
am almost ready for a final sanding of the epoxy on the topsides and
interior. The mast, rudder, and lee board are done and I just started
on the thwarts. I am going to use some clear Alaska Yellow Cedar I have
for the thwarts rather than the foam/plywood that Bolger specifies.

All along I planned to install the access plate into the forefoot but I
kept putting it off and I think now I will not. It rains so much here
that I cannot imagine that water will not get past the plate. I have
the same suspicion about the other access hatches but at least they
will never be underwater.

I am installing a diaphragm bilge pump on the inner side of the aft
bulkhead and created a small sump in the bottom to hold a strainer so I
will be able to pump the boat dry.

I put a hole in the transom to drain the splash well and I may install
a little flapper on the outside to keep following seas out. It looks
like the plans show holes in the bulkhead to hold the oars. This
doesn't make sense to me as it would allow water into the boat from the
splashwell.

The sail is on order from Duckworks but I am still looking for an
outboard. I have owned several Honda 7.5/8/10's in the past and I would
like to find a 10 for Fastbrick so I am looking for a used one.

Has anyone else seen the Chinese outboards now available? They are
knockoffs of Yamahas and they even say that Yamaha parts will work but
the outboards come with an extensive parts kit. Price is about $1300
for a 10 hp fourstroke on EBAY. The brand name ia Sail Outboards.

As always, very nice looking work. I have 2 dogs, 75 and 80 lbs., which
I have wanted for some time to take boating. Long story short, I'm
currently boatless and the first boats I'll be building this year,
hopefully before the end of summer, will be small. It has been my
assumption a kayak or canoe would be out of the question w/ a dog but a
mid size row/sail boat might be ok, minimum 4' beam and not too much
deadrise. Robote lists a 45" beam and has a relatively deep V bottom.
Is your plan for boating w/ your dog in the Robote based on experience
or conjecture? I'm not being critical or facetious in any way. I'm
genuinely curious if you have experience with a dog in such a small,
relatively tippy boat. I may have to reconsider the minimum
requirements for canine boating. Thanks.

My FastBrick, Stargazer, is nearing completion. She's getting her
exterior paint this month. Next month she'll get her insides
painted, the hatches and other hardware installed, and by the end of
March should have her spars and other appendages installed and be
ready for water when the ice melts in May. The last page of her
photos on my website is here:
http://www.kolbsadventures.com/fastbrick_9.htm

There are probably a few minor navigation errors in my webpages -
please let me know off-list if you find any.

Meanwhile, my Diablo project (still unnamed) is also moving rapidly
along. I'm done glassing her hull, and I'm installing outer gunwales
and spray rails next weekend, and should get started on her interior
structure as well. Her webpages start here:
http://www.kolbsadventures.com/diablo_1.htm

Since there's always time for another project while expoxy is curing,
last month I started knocking together a Michalak Robote design.
This is going to be my after-boatbuilding recreation with my dog on
those long summer days. I'm planning to glass her hull instead of
just taping the outer seams. Her webpages start here:
http://www.kolbsadventures.com/robote_1.htm

There is definitely a navigation error at the bottom of robote_1.htm -
just use the link at the top of that page to see the next page.

Comments, suggestions, derision, and inveterate nit-picking are
welcome as always.
