Re: sailmaking/Johnson 3.5hp for Micro

Hi, David!

I admire your hability in sail making. I think I'm not prepared to
do this right now, may be in some years... This is a hawl
art/craftmanship to learn!

Now the only thing I want is to finish my Micro. 4 years already and
is perhaps 80%...

Best regards

Hi, all!

Nels, I did nothing special to finish my keel. I think the only secret in my case was high temperature. The lead was boiling almost 10 minutes once in the mould! We could not belive it! I have to say that the weather was helpful, pretty warm, a typical summer day.

We were 4 people the "D" day. One, perhaps the most important in the team, was the "fire expert" (if you have a piromaniac friend, he's the right person!

We used a huge amount of larch oak bricks, and in the final 5 minutes before we opened the tap, we insuflated air with a manual blowing device, I call this the "turbo effect".

The raw material was dirty scarp lead, from car wheels. It's amazing to see how you can get really clean lead from such a dirty material.

...and that's the hwole history about my keel

Thank for viewing my pictures. Those files are a great source of inspiration for me.

Francisco,

Molto Bene!

Now you can try your hand at sailmaking! I just finished my first
ever sail for an olde English Enterprise Racing Dinghy. This has
given me confidence to perhaps try one for a Birdwatcher II. I hope
to order the plans tomorrow. I also need to order plans from Payson
for the 15'6" workskiff as my ole Diablo has had it. It is time for
a better fishing machine anyhow. Pointy Skiff roof rack mounting
kit is tomorrows project, got the design from a Brick builder's web
site.

Hi Francisco,

The photos look great. Thanks for posting them. Bathtub set-up looks
really well thought out, but the boiling lead looks pretty scarey!

How did you get the finished keel looking so good? What did you find
to be the best way for smoothing it?

So now your motor can rotate for reverse OK?

Looking foreward to seeing more photos as you progress.

Gracias

Nels
I have posted some bad-old pictures of my micro Astrolabio in the
photos section of this group

I need more recent pics whit the keel instaled...

Actualy I'm working with the helm, and I'm planning to ask for help
whit the paint.

Enjoy the pictures!

Francisco

I had a 1974 4hp Johnson on my Micro built according to plans. The
issue is not the shaft length, but the cowl shape. It needs to be of a
low profile in order to turn in the space provided.

I was able to turn the 4hp in the space with the handle folded up.
just grab the motor cowl and spin it around!

Congratulations!

Mr. Ramírez

I use a 5 hp johnson on my Micro.
With the throttle handle in the vertical position, I can turn the
motor 360 degrees.
I have a reverse on my engine, but never use it as it usually is
almost unsteerable, once you hit the reverse it usually throws the
rudder to one side or another and is almost uncontrollable. But being
able to swing that motor all the way around makes it to where you can
drive that boat through anything, it usually freaks people out when
they see my "little square bathtub" turning on a dime like it had pod
drives.

The short shaft works, but weight distribution becomes an issue. With
four people on board, everyone has to have their own spot once that
engine gets up to speed to keep it from cavitating. I would have gone
with a long shaft if I had found a good deal like I did on the short one.

Good luck and please post some pics.

I don't think he's talking about the tilt, but rather the ability to rotate
about a vertical axis and drive astern.

Isn't that what paddles are for?

Francisco,

A short shaft outboard will work fine on your Micro.Whether or
not you can actually tilt it all the way up in that little opening
is another question.I found out that a Mercury 5 hp could not
swing/tilt all the way up and simply cut out the top of the transom
and used a bronze traveller horse for the mainsheet turning block.
Buy the Zodiac, enjoy it,and test for yourself if the engine
will tilt up.If it does not, make the necessary modification(real
easy since you are not actually building but removing stuff :-) )
and enjoy the Zodiac while you re-model the transom.

Good luck with your Micro and do not forget to post some nice
pictures in a file section of one of the many Bolger storage sites!

Sincerely,

Peter Lenihan,ex owner/builder of the Micro LESTAT,from along the
snowy shores of the St.Lawrence............
Hi, Bolgerados!

Does somebody had installed a 2 stroke 3.5hp Johnson (short shaft) in a micro
with the transom as per plans?

I don't know if there is enough place to rotate the engine 180º to go astern,
since this model has no reverse.

After looong time, my Micro "Astrolabio" is 80% done, and now I can get a
Zodiac with this outboard. I will buy it if I can use the same motor for my
Bolger box too...

Thanks in advance for your help!
