RE: A modest proposal
Hey,Joe. Given your time limits, I suggest you stick with the 6 hour boat
idea. Robert Fraser in Dartmouth NS picked up two 16 ft. pieces of 1x10
yellow pine and a sheet of plywood on his ways to Florida a few years ago.
He built a pirogue in no more than two days out side the motel he and his
wife were staying in somewhere in the Keys. They used it to explore various
waterways throughout Florida over a couple of weeks, then gave it away
before they drove back to Nova Scotia. I think he traveled with a very
modest tool kit and used ring nails and Home Depot caulking/sealant, no
epoxy, no fibreglass. I've also watched him build a very similar boat using
1x4 t&g for a cross planked bottom with carpenter's caulking in the grooves
rather than using plywood. That one could also be built in two days or less
using only hand tools. It's a good design for flat water paddling or bayou
poling, but not great for white water and rather heavy for anything more
than a very short portage. But if you want to know more contact me directly
and I'll see if I can get hold of Robert for you.
