Re: Brick plans
Also in addittion to the plans of Grout included with Brick from
Bolger he might be willing to throw in the Gaff Rig and Flying Cloud
variants as well. Might even be others.

I haven't checked, though my Cynthia J has/is being built straight from the
book. I think the view is that the cost of the book covers the royalty for
building from it. I own the first three books, but I can only use BWOM if I
get it out of the library. I think from a moral perspective, one would need
to own the book they were building from, then it would be okay to build
from. The benefits of buying the plans though, is being able to get advice
from Bolger if it is needed.

Only one concern, the plans from Harold payson are the fro the big tortoise
not the brick as
shown in BWOM. The plans for the brick in BWOM are obtained from Phil
Bolger, address avalible from yahoo group. Would agree with Chris about

You are right--I think the Payson plans are the same
as the "streched tortoise" once sold by Common Sense
boats. I built one of these years ago. They don't
have the load-carrying capability of the "original"
brick, of course, but (unlike that boat) are very
manuverable under oars, and not unpleasant to row--all
in all, a delightfull little boat. Sam

Do You Yahoo!?

The plans that Payson has, labeled "Big Tortoise (or Brick)" is not
the same boat as the Brick in "Boats With an Open Mind." It is more
like a "stretch" Tortoise, with a beam of 3'2" and less freeboard than
the wider Brick. I built one (Big Tortoise), not quite done, and hope
to put it in the water in a few weeks, when the weather is warmer. I
think you can build a Brick from the BWOM book. I think they're all
good first projects. Charles Rouse

I recommend that you buy the Brick plans.
Harold Payson sells them for
For $30 you get the full-size plans, a sheet explaining the steps to
building it, and the freedom to contact Dynamite for help.
Plus, you get the satisfaction knowing that the people who do the
intellectual hard work get their fair share.
It isn't much money at all. Plus, it's better.
