RE: [bolger] I'm a Bolger Boatbulder and more trailering comments
David,
Congratulations....never mind the size or its intended use. You did it.
You are a boat builder. I, like some of us, am still calculating wood costs
for my intended Kayleigh.
NOTE to the Chrysler mini-van owners. Its my understanding that Chrysler
made the decision to use babbit metal bearings (bushings in my opinion) in
place of real bearings in their 4spd automatics. We know the outcome.
Besides what I suggested earlier for tow vehicles, here are two more to add
to the list: GM's mini van and the Suzuki V6 Grand Vitara (with the
automatic). Both have real body on frame construction and rear wheel
drive. I believe the GM is available with all wheel drive. The Cute Ute
Suzuki has a real 4X4 configuration.
Before the laughter about the Suzuki begins, I used my 4 cyl 5spd '93
(Sidekick) to tow numerous trailer loads of stuff including two 150 mile
trips dragging a full tandem axle U-haul full of household goods. One big
advantage is the real 2 spd transfer case; it will pull an amazing amount of
weight up slippery surfaces in low range. I confess to beefing up the
suspension with aftermarket sway bars front and rear and KYB gas shocks
(Calmini in Bakersfield, CA). Unfortunately, all this abuse did fry the
clutch at 75K miles, hence the automatic recommendation. My wife's '99 V6
has the same real truck driveline, gobs of power and still gets an honest 25
mpg highway, 21 city. It may get pressed into occasional towing duty when
the Kayleigh is finished.
Enough of this....
Jim

Hi all -
I've been lurking on this list for quite a while, and yesterday I joined the
ranks of people who have built a Bolger boat. She's an Elegant Punt, painted
white with a blue bootstripe to match the sailboat she will serve part time
as a tender to (the rest of the time she will be a little sailing and pond
fishing boat). I know she's just a little punt, but I am so darned proud of
myself that you would think I built the Mary Rose herself. Just to be able
to row around the pond yesterday, with my son, in a boat that I built
myself -- nothing could be better.
I cannot say enough in appreciation of this list. I learn something from one
of you everyday.
If anyone ever wants to have a Lake Champlain (Vermont) area messabout, I'd
be all for it. If anyone sees a plastic Catalina sailboat named "Spirit"
pulling a cute little white and blue punt near McNeal Cove in Lake
Champlain, make sure you say "Hi."
Now...what to build next? Hmmmmmm

Hmmmmmm
