I have rowed a boat of similar beam with 6' oars, and I'm 5'10".
Suggest you go to www.apci.net/~michalak and look in archives for
article on how to make oars. Most commercial oars are heavy and
suitable for pushing off rocks and poking in the mouths of alligators.
Also, you can make the socket part of the oarlocks with a piece of
brass pipe which fits nicely with 1/2" shank. YOu can epoxy it into a
block of wood attached to the gunwhales. I forget which parts are the
oarlocks and which part have another name, but I hope you catch the
idea. This is a trick I observed on a Platt Monfort boat and copied
successfully.
If you don't go alongside other boats, then put the locks on the
outside. More spread of the oarlocks tends to make for better rowing
(up to a point).

Well, I have gotten to the point of real expense on building the Teal:
oars, sails, lines, and hardware.
Does anyone have an idea of a good lenght of oar for a Teal and a
slightly-less than 6' tall rower.
Oars are to be a compliment to sails: I hope not to have to row all
the time, but sometimes the wind around here just drops..
