It's LOUD! (what did you say?) <g>

One must have a heart of stone to read the death of Little Nell by Dickens
without laughing. <Oscar Wilde>
i think the pump idea is a great idea....i build aluminum boats and a
freind a couple years ago built a home made version of a diablo if
there is such a thing...bought a old jetski of ebay and stuck motor
and drive in it...but now i cant seem to find those pictures...
Good Mooring David,

More than happy to help. Bought the pumps from Harbor
Freight,
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?
itemnumber=41076 if link does not work, just enter 41076 into the
search box at www.HarborFreight.com Pumps [complete] run $280 each
plus a couple bucks shipping or you can buy at a HF store. You'll
also need about $150 dollars worth of 2" plumbing valves and
fittings.

Mounted the pumps to a simple 2x6 mount I built across the
back of my Diablo, if I can find the time I would like to redo the
engine mounts, 2x6 looks cheap to me. Use the original Briggs &
Stratton engine mounted controls, have yet to come up with a good
remote setup.

Engine sound is a problem. I'm still using the original
Briggs & Stratton mufflers. To give you an idea what my crabbing
trips are like, get two lawn mowers (borrow the neighbors), get a
lawn chair then run each mower at full throttle (mowers on either
side of you) while sipping lemon aid in your lawn chair! I bought
some 2" diameter stainless steel tubes from Ebay, planning to build a
muffler using water from the pumps to quiet the rumble.

For novelty, you cannot beat it but for functionality not a
great idea. Best speed I can get is 8mph [using GPS] with both
engines at full throttle. My 5 hp Briggs & Johnson outboard project
moves me along just fine, should do better once I get the prop small
enough to let the engine come to full power. If you want to build a
drive like mine, I'm happy to give you any help I can. Here's a web
site of another fellow who had the same idea using water pumps for
boat drivehttp://www.belljar.net/jetboatdevel1.htm

Dan.

That is the wildest thing I have seen on this board for a long time!

A couple of questions...

1. how much do these motors cost?

2. How did you install it?

3. How loud are they?

In other words, is the trade off for low cost worth the other
factors? Inquiring minds want to know.

That was a very, very cool idea. Congratulations!

Hi Jon,

I too have a Diablo, it's the first boat I've built. For power I used a
pair of 5.5hp Pacer Water/Trash pumps. See pics:
http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=2117932183

Built the boat just to test my idea of using inexpensive air cooled, four
cycle engines in a boat. It's no speed demon, 8mph at best. Almost never
get away from a boat ramp without a bunch of guys looking over my boat
and scratching there heads (or calling the state hospital and asking if
there are any escapees matching my description) and asking questions. The
Briggs & Johnson outboard moved my boat along as well as both my jet
pumps running at full speed. I have other [silly] boat ideas and wish to
sell the Diablo so I can put my efforts into my amphibious riding lawn
mower (put the phone down, they released me from the Cookoos nest
already).

Subject: Low Power for Diablo?

The motor I'm planning to use on my FastBrick is a 9.9 hp high-thrust 4-
stroke. These are pretty expensive. PCB calls for up to 25 hp on
Diablo, but I'd like to try using the 9.9 on that hull first, and avoid
buying another expensive motor just to go fishing. I could also go
fishing in FastBrick, but I wasn't planning to build or buy a trailer
for it, since it's supposed to be the tender for our eventual cruiser.

Has anyone tried lower power motors on Diablo? If so, how did it work
for you?

PS: FastBrick (Stargazer) and Diablo (Hypoxia) are both in paint stage
as of this weekend!
