Re: [bolger] Trailer Sailer

Of the AS series, only the 19 footer would be considered trailerable.
While BS is technically trailerable, it is considered by many to be too
heavy to be much fun on the road. Also, the standard rig with it's 30+
mainmast is problematic when rigging at the ramp.

A better choice would be something a lot lighter and easier to rig. The
first Bolger design that comes to mind would be Birdwatcher. If you
still want a serious cruising boat that is still trailerable, I believe
Bolger himself says that the Jochems schooner is the far better choice
than Black Skimmer.

Bolger sells plans for a 25 foot Chebacco. It is a gorgeous looking
boat to my eye and he claims it will plane with a 15 HP motor. BWAOM
page 230.

Then there is Martha Jane at almost 25' with a lot more interior
room. Page 247.

Two others that are a bit more of a challenge to trailer are Long
Micro and Seabird '86.

I would also have a look a the Chebacco series. The plans sold by
Dynamite Payson are the best value anywhere with the possible
exception of the Folding Schooner or Sneakeasy.

Catfish Beachcruiser might be another consideration.

Then there is a whole series of Michalak designs.

Sold at Duckworks complete with sails and epoxy/glass kits for many
of them.

Philsboat, Frolic2 and Picara come to mind and the plans are very
reasonable.

I am looking for a trailerable design for day sailing and casual
overnights. I would like to single hand, or take SWMBO along. I
would also like to be able to row as need arises. I would be building
by myself, so simple construction would be a bonus. So far, Black
Skimmer is the most attractive to me. The high freeboard of the AS
series seems ungainly to me. Any advice/ideas?
