Re: Dawn Song - Aussie Birdwatcher

Thanks Nels. After several years in the group I am (finally) getting the hang of moving around this site.

Three main hatch covers, forehatch, aft deck hatch,
kickup rudder, two rope wheels for steering gear,
tiller, oar ports . . . There seem to be bits
everywhere getting precoated, fiberglassed, filled,
sanded etc.

Sometimes it feels like they are taking over my life
as well as my shop and my livingroom. Still, I'm
seeing progress every day and launching is feeling
imminent. ( I think I may have said this before, weeks
and weeks ago.)

Have cut and trimmed all the windows and offered them
up before I install permanently. Discovered that,
while Lexan doesn't stick to epoxy, the protective
plastic sheathing loves epoxy above all other things.
And it is quite stretchy so you can't grind it off the
epoxy either. No harm done, it'll be masked by black
Sikaflex inside the lexan.

Nels -

Yes, this plan has a lot more to it. My model is underway on the
kitchen counter. Sides cut out, frames to be built this week.

This is going to be a long, long, term project. The good news is that
my local lumber yard (literally at the end of the street) has a great
supply of mahogany, and can get non-treated southern yellow pine. I
have decided on BS 1088 Okoume for the ply.

I am currently working up a long term budget solution for this.
Boatbuilding, or paying the mortgage...tough choice.

Haven't heard from any of the other builders lately. I get the
impression that there is a lot more little bits and pieces to finish
up before completion with BirdwatcherII compared to the original?

Thanks Darrell for that link - she's a great looking boat, great lines especially in the sailing shot. Nice workmanship as well. Thanks too for your earlier posting and the email link to the builders.

I have purchased plans for BWII from PCB and would love to view the photos of Dawn Song. Can someone please advise how to access the folder?? Thanks.

I would love to post some more photos, but the owners did not give me
permission. As I mentioned, there are about 160 photos on the two
CD's and I think that they would be of real benefit to any potential
builder. If I get another sail on Dawn Song, I'll certainly keep the
group posted. Anyone who gets a chance should sail on a Birdwatcher.
One thing I forgot to mention was the ease with which the boat was
able to be manouvered. They have not built in the rowing portholes,
but we were able to leave the mooring with Ian paddling from the stern
until we cleared the area. The boat glided along nicely using this
method. The hull is of such light displacement that it is easily
driven. I am used to my Micro with the wide flat bottom and 400# of
lead in the keel so the Birdwatchers agility was noticeable. From
memory, I think that the two boats are of similar weight and
displacement but the Birdwatcher is 23'6" whereas the Micro is 15'4",

Cheers,

John

Nice to see another completed Birdwatcher, congratulations to the
builders.

Great write-up John!

Any more photos to drool over? There is still room for a few more in
the folder:-)

I e-mailed the owners to see about getting the CDs and congratulated
them - as I think this is the first BrdwatcherII to hit the waves!
And one without a motor too - Phil will be thrilled!

Keep us updated on any further experience you have with Dawn Song.
Such a great name:-D

Thanks,

Nels

Greetings,

I have posted two photos of "Dawn Song" an Aussie Birdwatcher in the
photo section in a folder of this name. The boat was built by Robyn
and Ian Singleton of Gundy New South Wales and I had the pleasure of
going for a sail on her at Toronto (Lake Macquarie New South Wales
this afternoon. Lake Macquarie is the largest inland salt water lake
in Australia and is many times the capacity of Sydney harbour.
Some interesting notes on the boat:
- It is based on the BWII plans
- It does not have the BWII stern but a modified "closed" in pointy
stern as per BWI
- It has the solent lug rig
- They have two masts (One wood the other aluminium)

I first met Ian and Robyn at the Sydney Wooden Boat festival where
they displayed the Birdwatcher. I purchased two Cd's from them for
$30(AUD) which detail in about 160 photos the complete build of their
boat. I obtained their permission to post this message plus two of
the photos because I thought the group may be interested and they were
unable to get on to Bolger yahoo groups.
Robyn and Ian were attending the Heritage Afloat boat show in Toronto
and kindly agreed to take me out for a sail.
The test sail was for about three quarters of an hour and the boat is
responsive, nimble and fast in the 10 - 15 knots of breeze. They are
still experimenting with the solent lug rig and the new aluminium mast
so the set of the sail was not optimal, but the hull is easily driven
by the single sail. I think that the original BWI 125 sqft sail is
more than adequate for this boat in 10 knot plus winds and I would not
contemplate a solent lug rig against the simplicity of the original.
I have read all the reports of the Birdwatcher's sailing
characteristics of being able to see both the horizon and the bottom
of the sea at the same time, but nothing prepares you for the feeling
you get when she heels and the water starts to climb the lexan windows
on the leeward side. They have had the boat over on her beam ends on
Sydney Harbour and had craft running over to assist only to find that
all on board are laughing as she rights herself!
I think this is a great daysailer for closed waters (Sydney Harbour)
and she appears reasonably weatherly with the increased area and
weight of the BWII centreboard.
I had a bit of a test sail but did not feel confident without the wind
in my face. It wasn't a hot day but the dark lexan provided good
shade and glare resistance from the sun in the clar blue sky.
Based on what I have seen and from the sail, this boat is a great
concept and worth the build. I may get the chance for another sail as
Ian and Robyn are bringing the boat to Sydney when they come down for
their son's wedding at the end of April, if so I'll keep the group
apprised.
I have ontained their permission to write this posting and also to
supply their email address in case those of you who are building would
like to discuss the detail(See below)
