Re: [bolger] Making Masts?

I bought a power planer through e-bay, payed less than $36, and I love it.
It's one of those "Chicago Electric" models, just search for "hand planer" or
"power planer" or check out the following link:

It really is a very neat tool. Cuts very smoothly, easily controlled, and makes
nice shavings, not sawdust like a belt sander (which I also bought through
e-bay). I figured at $36 bucks, if all I ever used it for was my masts, it
would be a good investment (better than several bottles of asprin), but I like
it so much, I'm keeping it, I'm sure I'll find more uses for it.

I was talking to a friend about possibly renting a power plane for
mast building and he offered the use of a 6" tilting bed
planer-joiner. Venerable old machine with lots of cast iron and a
huge
motor. I a not sure how long the bed is, I just had a quick look at
it. Maybe 2 feet or so. Is there any practical way to use that to
help
round out a mast from four sided stock?

Not really to round it out, but you could use it make the mast blank nice
and strait prior to the rounding operation.

Probably, though, it is more trouble than it's worth.
