Re: bolger 2: catamaran

G'day Peter,

here's a couple of spots for as they surface, as is convenient:

There is already a photos album created by Jim Pope with some pics
of St Jan The Martyr : Bolger2/Bolger Catamaran.

If you have any high resolution pics of her you'd care to post then
there's a files folder at: bolger4photos/Power Catamaran.

Cheers
Graeme

Hi Graeme,

What? Me mind?! Of course not :-)

It will simply take some time to locate the pictures and scan
them. They are all presently in storage as I live in the fine grey
zone between a boat not yet ready to be lived-aboard and a willing
crewette putting me up at her place for a spell ;-)
Create the file and I will send photos as they surface.

Sincerely,

Peter"in transit" Lenihan, from along the great shores of the
St.Lawrence.........
Hi Nels,

in the archives you mention MAIB 15December. In 2005 I take it? I'm
not sure which MAIB volume and issue this would be.

I've added some details to the Designs Database under Power
Catamaran.

Peter, would you mind if we had some copies of pics of St Jan The
Martyr from your Duckworks article placed in a St.JTM/Trashcat
bolgergroup photos/file?

Perhaps a file for all the Bolger catamarans?

Graeme.

Thanks for the full story of your boat Jim. It really is an
interesting concept and looks real good in those photos taken by
Peter.

I gather that your hydrofoil propulsion device would work something
like a dolphin tail, and you some how had it reciprocating up and
down?

I wonder how St Jan The Martyr would adapt to sail? Seems to be a
about a 2/3 scale Sharpie Catamaran (the one with the spacious
camping shelter and adamantly not Wharramesque). A moderate sailplan
could deliver thrust equal to the 3hp outboard. Could be good in
very thin water.

Cheers
Graeme

Hi Graeme and Jim,

Latest version upgrade is called "Trashcat". A design for cleaning up
trash along waterways.

There is a cartoon here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BolgerCartoons/files/Trashcat/

Very innovative as usual from PCB&F.

This was taken from an article in MAIB which also had a photo of Jim
and Phil on Jim's boat I believe.

Maybe do a search of the archives here as I am not sure which MAIB
the article was in,

> Hi Graeme,

As far as I know Phil never completely finished the design of St Jan.

I asked him for a simple catamaran with which to test a hydrofoil
propulsion idea which I called a Foil Oar. As built, the boat had a
hatch through which I could mount the device and pump it up and down. The
device worked to a degree but needed further development which the
economics of the matter didn't allow. So St Jan became a fun knockabout.

Phil at the time was living and working aboard his lovely Resolution
which he kept moored alongside at the Montgomery Boat Yard in
Gloucester, Mass. I had asked Phil for a test article, built cheap. That
is what I got. Phil produced a pencil sketch. Dave Montgomery laid the
boat out and I remember Phil telling me that he and Dave had consulted
on the design of the two box spars that tied the two hulls together. I
guess that Dave must have used some left over pattern stock to build the
hulls. For sure, it wasn't marine grade anything. As built she didn't
keep the water out, but she did work as a test bed pushed along by a
little Evinrude Duck twin outboard. 3hp or thereabouts.

In following years the leaks got fixed, not by Dave, but by Brad Story,
the last of that famous family of Essex ship and boat builders. I
designed a folding bench seat for two that was added. An Essex antique
shop yielded a small antique chrome plated bronze steering wheel which I
side mounted beside the bench. Her running lights were powered by a
small gel cell battery which was kept up by a pair of solar panels on
the two foredecks. At the suggestion of PCB St Jan had a parasol which
also served as a mount for the white running light. Season by season a
little more epoxy and fiberglass had to go on, and at the end, the junk
wood she was made of told me that she needed more work than I could do
myself. So off she went to live out her last in Maryland where I think
that for a while she made someone else happy too.

I don't know what record the Bolgers kept of the little boat. Phil rode
on it a couple of times. But if you write them and ask what they have I
think that you will get a response.

All the best,

Jim Pope

Jim Pope's St. Jan the Martyr. See thread from message #49349.
What is PCB&F's design name and number?

This is the one, I think, only one of her kind, that was posted about
very recently. Sadly, she succumbed to the dread rot and was cut up.
