Re: Surf launched

Hi Loy,
thanks for sharing your Surf and construction photos. Looks real
good.

http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/bolger6/photos/browse/7aa2

Do you know the final weight?

Long time ago Jim Michalak suggested to the editor of Instant
Boatbuilder, Jeff Hull, he should cut down that centre frame, as JM
had done to Teal. Made a much better camper, JM said. Didn't mention
floor boards though, how are they for sleeping on? To give a dry
camp, would you still have to sponge out and lay down a tarp that
laps up the sides beneath bedding as Bolger wrote for Jinni in "The
Singlehander"? I don't get that, as the floor boards in Jinni seem
quite high (~4") off the bottom.

Cheers
Graeme

Hi Loy,

Thanks for the photos. Your boat looks really great. Nice balance of
paint and bright finish. Sounds like a useful modification, with the
floorboards. Really nice little trailer too:-)

Perfect little picnic/daysailor.

I built it to plan except that I cut the bottom of the center frame
down to 1 1/2" and built some floor boards from SYP yellow pine. To
make up the difference in the frame, I made the gunwales 1 1/2" thick
similar to Windsprint. The floor boards add a lot of low weight and
keep us out of the bilge. I bought the sail from Duckworks. I have
added a picture folder to Bolger 6. I will try to add more pictures
soon including some construction pictures.

Wow, my hardiest cangratulations and you have dislayed an example of
perservance for us all!

Surf is one of my favorite small boat designs and I would love to see
some photos if possible.

Did you build to plan and use the sail as offered by Dynamite?

Nels
I finally got to launch my Surf today. I was one week from completing
it last August when hurricane Katrina hit and I was so busy I never
got to finish it until now. I was pleasantly surprised by two things.
One, it was more stable than I thought it would be for such a narrow
beam. Two, it pointed higher that I thought it would. The winds were
light, 2-6 knots, with some 8-10 occasionlly thrown in to tease me. It
really flew when the wind picked up. The usual power boaters came over
to gawk and compliment the boat. Sailboats are extremely rare in north
Louisiana.
