Re: bolger walrus monster !!!

Antispray -> Walrus -> Providence -> ???

The file

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Bolger2/files/AntiSpray/

points to this archived thread: "Big (but not HUGE) Sharpie -
ANTISPRAY 48"

or bolger/message/6990

What is "Coastal Cruising" (back in 1997)? Maybe Walrus is mentioned
there?

Thanks Graeme - I will delete my copy.

I have also heard PCB praise Jim before, regarding his aeronautical
engineering background perhaps, and how he applies it to sailing
theory or something like that?

Obviously they have a mutual respect for each other.

Nels
Anybody get SCA's permission to post the file???

Nels,
the SCA article is already posted in the files of this group

(or search "literature", "interview", etc in Bolgrgroups' Index,

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bolger/database)

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bolger/files/Phil%20Bolger%20Interview/

Interesting comments on Jim Michalak too, I thought ( confirming
certain comments of JM).

Cheers

The boat is mentioned at the end of an Interview SCA did with PCB
about 4 years ago or more. I received a copy on a CD from a certain
Bolgerado who must remain unamed;-)

I tried to post the interview on Bolger6 but the files are already
full so I put it in the photos section. Perhaps if one
chooses "large" for each photo one can read it. It mentions the boat
right at the end of the interview.

I have also heard it mentioned by name once or twice in passing,
when talking about the larger sized boats and also regards the
Chinese gaff rig - where it is being drawn in a fairly large size.

Bolger seems to favour only one sail when using the CG rig so as to
cut down on the number of strings that would be kind of mind-
boggling on a schooner for example and it also saves the weight and
nuisance of a second mast. He compensates for the taller sail area
by using a heavy steel plate on the bottom.

Walrus also has two smaller engines rather than one to ensure the
prop stays immersed when motorsailing heeled on a long tack, with
one engine running.

It may make sense to post it elsewhere if there is room.

PB&F have designed perhaps 750 boats and we know of, at best, 500.

I believe it's mentioned in the writeup on Anti-Spray that's somewhere
in one of the Files sections. I'm pretty certain that Susanne
mentioned this boat to me in a phone call shortly after the start of
our commission about five years ago. She didn't mention it by name,
but the details in the link sound exactly like the boat she described.
If I recall correctly, they had just finished the design around that
time.

I have had no problem getting the sail down for reefing or whenever.
There is not really any problem with binding of the gaff and batten
jaws to the mast. These rigs do have 'downhaul' lines which you pull
on to assist things coming down directly.

Walrus? Cool, I would love to see study plans too. This design in new to
me, has there ever been a write up in MAIB? Judging from style, it probably
has a design number higher than 600.
