Re: Lenihan Zen

Hi Leo,

thanks for documenting your AS29 build, and thanks for that contact
info for Emilio's Long Micro, and the photos at your site. Do you know
if Emilio has launched his LM? Is he cruising the Spanish Med coast?
He certainly made some interesting modifications.

Cheers
Graeme

this is from a conversation I had with Emilio in 2003.

Recently (Affter three years, first one to make a model) I'm close to
the finish of my wonderful Bolger's Long Micro, to sail in West
Mediterranean (South East Coast of Spain). I think mine is the first
LM in Spain (probably the first Micro too).

I'm Keen on AS29, but Dave & Anke's Luna is probably my best option to
"do it myself" a new boat for longer voyages (North Africa), best
acomodation for a family of 5 members, etc. I like very much the
iconoclast but respetuous actitude, open to make changes that Luna
proves.

I, modestly, had maked my own changes over the LM design: solid oak
plywood-sandwiched bolted keel, steel rudder, dry cockpit, convertible
roof of doghouse keeping the companionway, structural water and fuel
tanks, adeed bulkward to make interior lockers and exterior galley
sink, back self-drying cockpit, etc.
Here I send recent fotos of mi boat, where you can observ the changes
I told.

If you want some commentaries I could make them, but in spanish.

to contact Emilio send mail to ejordan at wanadoo dot es

Thanks for the good wishes, Graeme.
The exams are both a just very little theoretical, but mostly practical
work (assignment-like). We get little object the be build in wood and
metal, don't think they'll take plastics in just then. Didn't do much
enough of plastics at school (although I got that stuff all over me at
work). Wood construction is very, very interesting, yes. Over here a
boat builder apprenticeship is meant to give you the abilities to
(theoretically) work in all materials.

Good luck with the straightening out, Thomas. Pleased to hear that
otherwise it's going well - January is still a while away, so will the
exams then be theoretical or is it a project/assignment that must be
finnished? Here, boatbuilding apprenticeships especially in
traditional or wooden construction, as opposed to all kinds of
plastic, seem to be very small in number now, and are relatively
difficult to obtain.

In the photos I saw many differences to the plan and attempted to second
guess the builder's thoughts, but once I saw Emilio's LM inverted with
the keel attached I was somewhat flummoxed by it all. [:-/] Rotating
LM with keel to any position desired is unheard of. At least I have'nt
heard it before, I recall someone fitted the keel to a Micro with her
rotated on her side, but Emilio had already fitted the keel! I guess a
boatyard crane is invaluable?

The details of his mast pivot, metal skeg/rudder mount (and is that an
all alloy rudder assembly?) & etc are amazing. Surely the open space in
the cabin top is too large to later fit the standard hatch, no? Will
Emilio fit a low profile pilot house cabin top of an AS29 sort, or is he
intending more of a Navigator sort? I think you are right about the
internal bulkhead space, and I think the extra cabin bulkhead is also
for added storage space.

I think all the extra details included by Emilio may indicate he intends
to undertake some very extensive cruising. I have a few concerns about
how some of the modifications may affect seaworthiness - will green deck
water drain as quickly, etc.? I wonder if he has correspondence with
PCB&F in regard to his modifications?

I really look forward to further pictures of Emilio's LM, and I bet the
finished boat will look really wonderful (already does). A write-up
about the boat from Emilio or Leo would make for interesting reading, if
it can be arranged. Very interesting. (LM is on my short list of really
economical Bolger boats that may be suitable for an extensive future
cruise of the north Australian coast and islands.)

Good news about Leo's AS29. I suppose in the Netherlands after a while
they'll have to make the difficult, but enviable, decision about whether
to cruise to the East via the Atlantic and Med (or the Cape), or whether
to traverse the Rhine and Danube etc. Or perhaps, the French canals to
the Med? Wonderful boat, what choices.

Cheers

Graeme

Hi Graeme,
apprenticeship's going rather well, only worry about all the stuff I
still have to learn for the upcoming intermediate examination in
January. Won't have all too much time left when we finish the most
recent boat and I've taken my holiday and overtime... Well, to be exact,
it's pretty much disorganized, and that shouldn't be. But I'm trying to
set some things straight at the moment... Hard work, if my collegues
aren't cooperating.

Emilio's LM: I like his rounded cockpit, although that's been much extra
work, according to Leo himself. Just wondering why Emilio added this
forward bulkhead. Didn't find out up to now what he wants to store in
there. I'd pretty much prefer the "open" version with all the space to
store your stove and everything.
Still Emilio really seems to be one of those who "tune" the boat to
their liking a lot. Yet very original ideas. The opening in the bulkhead
to the cockpit, what is it about? What do you think? Looks like there's
got to be some space inside the bulkhead, too.

On Leo's AS29: They're going to take it down the Rhine to the
Netherlands to live aboard for some time. If that goes alright, they'll
have a further look on what to do next. Leo's dreaming of sailing the
boat to South-East Asia to visit Buddhist countries, as he's a Buddhist
himself.

Cheers

Hi Thomas,

how's the apprenticeship going. Have you started yet. Thanks for
posting the link to Emilio's LM, I didn't see it at Leo's AS29 Junk
Ketch site. Emilios LM is looking good, isn't it? He seems to have
lots of his own ideas incorporated, and would appear to pay lots of
attention to the details too. Possibly another practitioner of
Bolgerado boatbuilding zen? A fully conceived vision flowing then to
a fully conceived vision?

Hi Thomas,

how's the apprenticeship going. Have you started yet. Thanks for

Wow, check out even the sink, stovetop, outboard, and little books on
the bookshelf. Wonder we will when Windermere waunches.
