RE: [bolger] Hot Knife

Weller's 'Porta-Sol' butane soldering iron can be had in two setups - just the solderer with regular tip and a cap with pocket clip and sparker for igniting, or in a plastic box with a little sponge, some solder, and 3 or 4 tips, including a flattened wedge-shaped blade for cutting things which would easily handle 1/2" line. Variable heat up to ~120W (plenty hot for cutting nylon, etc), long life on one 'charge' of butane, About 30 bucks for the iron alone at West Marine (I've seen it as low as $24 in electronics/tool catalogs), more for the full kit - have not seen kit at my local West store, but I bet they can order one, or look elsewhere for a better price. Don't know if that's reasonable enough for you but shop around. As portable as they come, works well, takes alot of abuse!, fuel available in any drugstore, and the full kit does it all - has a little torch attachment, a curly thing just for heatshrink, soldering tip, and cutting tip. A very handy thing to have in your toolbox.

Does anyone have a line on 'portable' hot knives that are reasonable in price and are effective on up to 1/2 in line?.
Low tech solution,

I have been using an old fillet knife and a propane torch for many
years now. Simple heat the fillet knife and slice away. It never
breaks!
