Re: Picara Pictures - Rig 43 in Bolger's 103 Sailing Rigs
Thanks Nels for the kind words and the hatch holdown idea.
Finish on this Picara is about as good as it will get, but the paint
will be detailed a little more.
Boards in the companionway are just scrap - hope to make a nice set
to match the ash tiller.
The footwell is Jim's Michalak's placement, reduced in width from 24
to 19
inches - cover bolts on and / or may be fastened by bungie cord,
would only bolt it in place if caught out in very heavy seas, that
along with the bottom board in the companionway would make it harder
to take water inside the boat.
Backrest were my idea, area behind them hides wiring and is foam
filled. Footwell will likely only be to stand in, seated, our feet
will likely be on the opposite lip of the footwell. -- forgot to get
the boat cushions in the picture, they bring the seating surface to
the same height as the footwell lip - footwell lip is well rounded
to the inside.
Will try to lead the forward anchor line all the way aft to the
cockpit and store anchors just forward of the footwell under the
little bridge deck. See how it works out.
The bulkhead (16.5) the tiller rest on is raised as high as possible
to help keep any aft boarding wave out of the boat, the aft slop
well was decked in for the same reason.
The decked over aft slop well and the area aft of the footwell can
be made 100 % watertight, each has a large access cover and each has
1 inch drain holes that allow any water in these spaces to drain
forward to the bilge pump - drain holes may be stoped by regular 1
inch boat plugs - so far I have decided not to put any drain holes
in the boats bottom. Area under the aft deck will be used for deck
chairs etc. storage with the cover off most of the time.
9 cu feet of foam on the utility room side walls, still with plenty
of room for ballast on the sole, an ice chest on each side with a
utility shelf over the ice chest to cook on. Battery under the step
down from the deck to utility room sole.
Enough for this post.

for one thing. You might be interested in the dogs that Peter Lenihan
used to hold the hatch into place when he built his Micro Lestat.
Don't know where he got them but they work great.
There is a fuzzy photo in Bolger 3 LESTAT folder. Maybe Peter can give
us more info on them?
