loosen the screws/ nails, by scorching the wood they are in contact
with, and with out the whole ballast block well epoxied into place you
would not only loose the strength in the keel, but I doubt you would get
through a season without dropping the lead out of the boat.
If you must deviate from handling the ballast in one piece, why not
cast in several sections, say thirty or so pounds each, then butter them
well with thickened epoxy and put them into place one at a time.

Luckily no one was hurt. It's hard to visualize how much righting force
420 pounds of lead can exert on a hull the size of the micro.
