Re: Bolger designes

Hi Don,

Thanks, just put the book on request at the library. It should be in
my hands sometime next week. I'm looking at this boat as the third in
a series. Windsprint for when I want to get away from it all, Folding
schooner for when I want to get away and take the wife along,
breakdown schooner for when I retire and want to get away for a month
or more at a time in the carribean.

The Breakdown Schooner is detailed in "Boats With an Open Mind".
Handsome boat. Excellent essay. For all Bolger's boat design genius,
his writing ability may be his major strength.

8' is trailerable in any state. IMO a relatively inexpensive flat
utility trailer could handle the 3 sections, getting her from off
season storage to the water in pieces.

I always liked the idea behind the breakdown schooner - being able
to build a large boat inland, trailer it easily in sections, and
then assemble it in the water. Seems a very appealing design.

The 8' beam is at the max for trailering but then this wouldn't be a
weekend trailer sailer, but one you would trail at most once at the
start and end of the season, leaving it in the water in between.

I see my current super brick project in the same way - trailer it
once and let it live in the water.

The breakdown schooner "Saghali" looks great. Might be just what I'm
loking for. The 8 foot beam may be a bit large to trailer though. I
may have to fax PCB and ask about the availability and price of plans.

Thanks

Also, take a look at the 'database' section on the home page of the
Bolger Yahoo Group.

The people around here keep a collective database of his designs.

Hi Steven,

There is not any archive, or catalogue anywhere of Bolger's designs
and apparently that is his choice to have it that way.

The book "Boats Win An Open Mind" is required reading for some of his
design philosophies and subscribing to "Messing About In Boats" is
about the only other current source, other than faxing him directly
with what you want in a design. Or asking here:-)

It there a complete catalog of bolger designes, preferable with a
study plan, posted anywhere. I'm building my first PCB design now, a
windsprint, and will be looking for a larger one sometime later. I'm
leaning towards the folding schooner just for the sheer beauty of the
thing, but would also love to get one that is usable on open
(unprotected) waters.
