RE: [bolger] LS: Deckstringers

On the roof of my Chebacco, I bent the plywood over the building forms, then
fitted the stringers and framing to the plywood and hull, then glued and
screwed them to the ply only. (use plastic sheeting so the roof doesn't glue
itself to the boat just yet). Then I took off the framed roof like a big
lid, cleaned up the the excess glue, painted and when I was ready, I glued
and screwed the whole thing on to the hull. This avoids having the
stringers getting out of place while you fasten them down, and also lets you
clean up, prime and paint the underside of the roof/deck before installing
it -- no drips on your face!

I think I left the building forms in place for the final gluing down too. I
had them out, but re-installed them for this, I remember cutting part way in
from the edges so I could easily cut them up and remove them for good once
the roof glue had set.

If you put the stringers in first, its still worth painting the underside
before gluing -- for my deck I traced around the stringers, then painted
each piece of deck before installing, just left the gluing surface bare.

I'm having a devil of a time installing the deck stringers into the
Light Scooner "Margaret Ellen." They just down want to take the two
way bending.

Any tips?

You must be using something really stiff like s. yellow pine. Rip them in
2 or 3 strips and glue them back together...
