Re: Any Tennessee builders here ?

Does this apply to all Bolger plans sold currently by Common Sense?
I bought 2 sets recently - long micro and martha jane. I collect
plans and have run across this before. I bought plans for a Hartley
Trimaran from ClarkCraft and later found out from Hartley that they
had rescinded rights to Clark Craft due to non payment of royalties.

It is a bit complex, dating back to Elroe La Roe

Bolger (SA?) explained the issue in message 1250 of this group.

I don't know all the details. The current owner of Common Sense never
received authorization by Bolger to sell his plans as far as I know.
He sells photocopies and pays no royalties so to me that sounds like
piracy.

the sense that Common Sense was once an authorized reseller and is no
longer but they still sell the plans without paying royalties? I'd
thought that the latter was the case, but I never paid close attention.
(I bought my plans from Payson.)

Hi Steven,

Over all it looks good with some recommendations on edge curves. Lug
rigs want a straight luff, so no luff round needed. The foot round you
give 6+ inches is a bit much for a fixed foot (attached to the boom.)
I recommend 3" or 76mm with the same for the head round. The 8" roach
shown on the leech would require the addition of battens to support
it. To go battenless make the leech round a negative 4" (-100mm.)

Be aware that the plans from common sense are pirated copies and may
be incomplete and not to scale. Also they will not include any
upgrades by PCB&F or be supported by the designer.

In other words a waste of money.

Nels
Sorry, Instantboats.com does not have the The Idaho plans, but you can
find them athttp://www.common-sense-boats.com/idaho.htm

Dan
You might also want to take a look at Idaho. Long like Tennessee but
with a narrower beam and a flat bottom for speed. Instantboats.com
sells the plans.

I started a folder in the photo section called Windsprint sail. The
one picture in the folder is the parameter listing in "SailCut" (a
free program) for the sail. If anyone would have the free time to
check over my parameters it would be very much appreciated. Also if
anyone is interested I have a AutoCAD (dxf) file of the sail segments
I can send you. Just cut them out of polytarp or tyvek, sew them up
and your in business. I haven't made this sail yet (I am sort of
jumping the gun here since I haven't completed my Windsprint yet either).

Thanks
Steven

some useful parameters for the windsprint sail

foot 11' 10" = 3606mm
luff 8'1" = 2464mm
Head (listed in program file as gaff) 10'2" = 3099mm
leach 15'9" = 4801mm
diagnal 13'2.5" = 4026mm
I have only ridden in the flat bottom version. If I were to build the
Sneakeasy (and my wife would like me to, she loves Fritz;s boat) I
wouldn't bother with the box keel. No need to complicate an already
wonderful and simple design.

Sneakeasy plans are available from PCB&F and from H.H. Payson
(instantboats.com). As I understand it, Payson has only the original
flat-bottom version. PCB&F includes a later variant with "box keel" for
enhanced stability in rough water. Mr. Bolger discusses the origin of this
variant in his book "Boats With an Open Mind".

The Tennessee and the Sneakeasy are two entirely different boats. Don't
let the box form for both fool you, they are designed for different
uses, are totally different in character and handle very differently.

The Sneakeasy is a day runabout with a totally flat run, it planes but
it has no change in attitude when it comes on step, makes no wake and
handles light chop like it wasn't even there. My neighbor Fritz Funk has
a web site on the building of his Sneakeasy.

http://www.alaska.net/~fritzf/Boats/Sneakeasy/Sneakeasy.htm

He has this boat in Wisconsin now where he has discovered an unexpected
attribute, with the outboard tucked up between the tails it can rival
the jet boats for shallow running, they act like a cheap tunnel drive.
He has pulled up next to a grounded aluminum skiff to rescue stranded
passengers while still floating. It is very efficient, he made a 200
mile trip on the Mississippi on one 12 gal tank.

The Tennessee is an outboard cruiser, it has considerable rocker. It
handles much better than the Sneakeasy at slow speeds because of this.
It also is very efficient but has a lower top end speed. Here is one of
the better series of pictures of a stock Tennessee.

http://www.boatdesign.com/jumps/dixtenn/Page.html

These boats get their performance on low horse power with light weight
and long and narrow form.

Tennessee plans are $100 US from (or at least that's what I payed a year
and a half ago)

Plans: Mr. Philip C. Bolger, P.O. Box 1209, Gloucester, MA, 01930, Fax:
(978) 282-1349

The plans are pretty basic.

Wayne,

You should search the messages archive of this group. There have been a few
discussions of Tennessee.

Incidentally, Sneakeasy is roughly half the size of Tennessee.

Snip...

What can you tell me about building this boat and how she rides :)
Also where do you recommend that I buy the plans at ?? I saw them for
sale at Dynamite Paysons place as a Sneak Easy but wondered if I could
purchase them from the original designer Mr. Bolger.

Hi Wayne, Phil only does things by FAX or snale mail.
As a rule. With that said here you are:

You can fax designer Phil Bolger at: 978-282-1340 - OR
- write him at: PO Box 1209, Gloucester, MA 01930.

Have you seen any of his books? I know "Boats with an
Open Mind", is still in print. I know he has a couple
alone the same line as the Sneak Easy. It may be worth
looking at the book or his other books if you can find
them.

I was reading a webpage where someone had setup a
Tennessee as an electic boat. He liked the way it rode
and handled on the water. Sorry I can't remember the
webpage.

Blessings Kristine

Hi Everyone !

My name is Wayne and I am new to the group. I live on the Tennessee
River in Loudon, Tenn. and have been wanting to build a plywood epoxy
boat for several years. It wasn't until I saw the "Tennessee" that I
knew what I wanted.
