I posted the article in April, 2006 and I am quite certain it was
within a month or so of reading about it in MAIB. Maybe March 2006?

Not sure if anyone ever tracked down #344. I assumed at the time he
was referring to Ida Little's Dugong but that turned out to be #365.
It was a 26'x 5' something version of a cold-molded sailing canoe.
Bolger felt she spent far to much money building it if I recall the
SBJ write-up.

If you search "Ida Little" there are some messages that relate to it
in the April archives.

My feeling is that BidwatcherII took the design to the point of being
unsinkable as well as self-righting from beyond 90 degrees. And this
enabled it to have more sail area and potentially better performance.

There are a lot of photos in the links section here of Don's build and
perusing the photos seems to make the looks kind of grow on a person.

I find it interesting that in the upgraded version it still calls for
external chines. I have to wonder if this is an avantage to it's
sailing performance or is it just for ease of building?

Nels,
Thanks for posting that article. It's interesting that the two other
Dovekie capsizes he heard of probably required assistance to rescue. He
implies that he would not now accept it as a safe enough design for public
consumption.
Has anyone seen design #344, the owner built "Dovekie"?
He must think the hull shape is ok if he would consider a birdwatcherized
production version. I've tought of that possibility with Bufflehead, but
will have to sail in a Birdwatcher to convince myself I would like it. For
now I will try adding sponsons.

What year was this article written?

Gary

For those who are not aware - there is a Bolger 7 group - which is not
listed on the home page here.

In the files section there I posted a copy of the Dovekie
retrospective Bolger wrote awhile ago.

I think the last three paragraphs related to Birdwatcher are worth
noting. Seems Mr. Bolger really has committed to that design concept.

I find it interesting that he suggested to the current management of
Edey and Duff to upgrade their tooling for Birdwatcher versions of
both Dovekie and Shearwater!

Another bit of interest was that the original Dovekie had a single
leeboard and out-sailed the production version with it's two shorter ones.

I think Jim Michalak too note of that:-)
