Re: [bolger] CSD Plans Book

Although it was called a 'book' I think it was best described as a big
catalogue. Looking at it, I can see no ISBN listed.

Not sure if I still have the plans book around or not. I may have
given it away along with a bunch of WB magazines. I probably could
recall most of the plans if I sat down awhile since I think I
memorized it. Pretty sure it cost $15 at the time. (For $10 more a
person could get a set of plans from Dynamite!)

I am quite certain there were no plans offered that you aren't already
aware of. There where of course the 12 or so plans still offered
illegally by CSB. And Bernie commissioned two or three more, Fishcat,
and Idaho and the CSD skiff - which no - was a design entry into a WB
design contest.

He suggested "Grout" to turn two Bricks into a schooner. I know he
offered Cynthia J plans and the Houseboat and Whalewatcher as well as
Birdwatcher. Bernie had a name contest for the "Big Birdwatcher" and
it was my suggestion that won. I put in two entries, Moosewatcher
(Felt the boat would be great for the McKenzie River) and Whalewatcher
as it would be more off-shore capable than Birdwatcher. Think I got a
free subscription to his newsletter for a year:-)

He had all the Micro series, Bee and Microtrawler included. Did not
have Chebacco I don't think. Had all the AS series - 19,29 and 38.
Sneakeasy and a couple of the State Series. Several of the power skiff
designs that Dynamite sells, the original kayak, and one or two of the
light schooner designs. (Not a lot of cross-over from Dynamite's plans
though.)

He also offered about 15 designs for standard building procedures,
using tables of offsets - much the same line that Dynamite offers for
his modeling series.

And then there were some non-Bolger plans. One called Flyaway that
came in 3 or so sizes, and a line of tortured ply canoes, skiffs and
kayaks. I think Estes still offers these as well.

Most of his descriptions included the cartoon and specs and the
narrative had a lot of camparison info regarding other designs and
excerpts from Bolger write-ups. Not a lot of photos since many had
never been built yet. Much in the same vein as Elrowe's writings.

Cynthia J comes to mind because it was not offered in the numbered key
format of the others and Bernie was very specific to point that out.
It was NOT an instant boat! There may have been two or three others
that way as well. Black Skimmer and Gauntlet perhaps? And of course
the "traditional" plans gave a great deal of warning that a person had
to know lofting, constructing of molds on a strongback etc. I would be
surprised if he ever sold any of those plans to us dummies.

I think he was the first to make us aware of BWAOM as well and offered
it in the catalog. Did he offer kits at that point and supplies
through System Three? Sails? Building and keel pouring tips?

Not sure now.

Nope, there was really nothing of which most people are not already aware.

(Was: Re: New Payson Book)

I had no idea CSD once offered 56 PCB plans, nor that they were in a
proper book. Does the group know of them all? Are they all in the
database designs list? Can anyone list them? Has anyone a copy of
the book? Does anyone know the ISBN number?

Wow, I'd like to read that one! (My 1991 CSD catalogue booklet has
only 18 designs, 4 prototypes (including Idaho), and a couple of
very short appendices, yet has been quite educational. Much more so
than the cost, or cover, would suggest.)

"..It was Phil who came up with the criteria, one that fit the man
and his dry sense of humor. The criterion was, any plan that Bolger
liked after it was built, the owner thought was a good boat and the
owner still liked Bolger.

CSD went from 12 plans to 56 almost overnight. I developed the CSD
Plans Book, which was much more than a mere catalog. In fact the
book has an ISBN number..." Bernie Wolfard 2000

http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/00/DM2000/articles/bernie/index.htm

I also wasn't aware of this version of the story about PCB, Elroe,
Bernie and CSD, then to PCB&F and CSD; then not, nor CSB.

Catfish especially would be great. Last I was aware of he had only
made the model. Another might be single-handed schooner which is
enough different than the other two to be intersting.

Maybe some entirely new designs. Not sure he would write anything on a
boat he has not built himself. His latest thoughts on wood materials,
epoxy, glass and tools would also be interesting I bet.

Those all sound like good guesses. Maybe we should expect to see the
designs that Payson already sells on his web site, but are not already
decribed in any of his existing books; Sneakeasy, Child's Pirate Boat,
Catfish (I hope).

Should be interesting in any case.

Yes you have to copy the black part and then click on the blue part.
It will open with an error, but if you paste the black part onto the
end of the blue it will work.

The other option is to:

http://amazon.com/

And type Harold H Payson into the search box.

Light Dory

And that appaulingly ugly thing that Phil designed to punish the
world for trying to put a sail or a motor on the Dory.

Book Description

From the acknowledged master of the "instant boat"—tips, techniques,
and designs for quick-and-easy plywood boatbuilding

Dynamite Payson offers you a new guide to building 15 exciting boats
from master designer Phil Bolger. Instant Boatbuilding with Dynamite
Payson includes plans and instructions for a multipurpose skiff for
sail, oar, and power; a pirogue for single or double paddle; a big
pram dinghy; a maneuverable peapod; a long, fast, rowing dory; a
rugged outboard-powered work skiff; and more. You will enjoy the
commonsense advice, step-by-step building instructions, and tips on
tools and materials that have made Payson a hero of amateur
boatbuilders worldwide.

Only speculation but my guesses are:

1. Cartopper - Subject of WB series.
2. Payson Pirogue - BWAOM
3. Ruben's Nymph.
4. Peapod
5. Fisherman Skiff

And probably some of the others are from previously published articles.

Any other guesses?

No matter what - his writings are always worth reading - and having
the articles on 15 designs all in one place is really great.

Wouldn't it be fun to get him and PCB&F and maybe Jim Michalak all
together for a messabout some time? Maybe in Gloucester.

I think his last boat book other than the single issue books through
WB, was published about 20 years ago (Bingo second printing I have
was '86) So that's a lot of time. I was thinking for instance the
Peapod might be sweat pea the one that was the subject of several
issues of building instructions in WB.
Interesting, I am looking forward to this book. He previous books
were, at their core, built around magazine articles he has authored.
In this case, I am unaware of him publishing in magazines, or did I
miss it?
Yes it is good news. Do you think it does contain a lot of new
content, or is it perhaps Instant Boats etc reworked a couple of
decades on? What's that boat on the cover

Graeme
Good news, I'll probably add that to the other books of his I have on
my shelf. It sounds as though some of the designs may not be new, but
rather designs that have been built in WB. Or maybe this is Phil's big
client, and it 15 brand new concepts! Not holding my breath though.

I also see that WB has a Small Boat mag coming out in December, so we
have an embarassment of riches there. I just gave up my WB
subscription, with some sadness, after being there since issue one.
Maybe the SB mag will be a better option.
