Re: Swallows and Amazons

Reply to Nels re: my folding schooner ...

I guess I'm a little superstitious about broadcasting news of the
project. Major moaning chair event was Hurricane Charlie, which blew
the door open on my shop but somehow managed to destroy only the
blueprints, which blew out the door and turned into papier mache.
However, Charlie also stole an O'Day 23 I had moored in Charlotte
Harbor at the mouth of the Peace River, leaving me the mooring and two
other anchors, two with snapped rodes and one with a mooring cleat
still attached, all twisted out of shape with the backing plate still
attached and fiberglass shards imbedded in the line. Lost the better
part of a year searching for a replacement. Wound up with a pretty fair
San Juan 21, but it required a certain amount of work to bring her up
to racing snuff. Found out I didn't like the boat for either racing or
cruising (like sleeping in a fiberglass coffin) and recently purchased
an AMF 2100, which I have always admired. Naturally, there's a little
work involved there, although the previous owner kept her in remarkably
good shape.

I figure about two months more work and I'll be ready to launch.
Forward hull has been waiting for its mate since before Charlie. Aft
hull has the sides attached to bulkheads, transoms, ribs. Next steps
attach chine logs, plane them down to accept the bottom, finish (paint)
exterior (Dynamite/Bolger colors), flip her over, attach decks, motor
well, bilgeboard wells, etc., and finish interior (mahogany stain and
filler, then varnish.)

Only other moaning chair event was that I installed 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 chine
logs instead of 1-1/2 x 3/4 on the forward hull, and didn't discover it
until I got ready to rip the chine logs for the after hull.
Whatthehell, keepthe chine logs the same. Maybe she'll sail better that
way, given some of the rationalizations I've read for outside chine
logs. No moaning. Full speed ahead!

Used paperback reading copies of the "Swallows and Amazons" series are
available quite cheaply through Abebooks. I am offering a
"collectible" if anyone is so inclined.

Hi Will,

Any photos to share? Any major "moaning chair" events?

Would love to hear any details you would like to share regarding the
build.

Nels
The Wooden Boat store (PO Box 78, Brooklin, ME 04616) has all 12 (not
10) Arthur Ransome books @ $14.95 each. I still read them from time to
time. Got me interested in sailing at the age of 11 ... 65 years ago.
Am nearing completion of a Folding Schooner.

There were over ten titles in the series, I assume this is the first

There has been some interest in Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and
Amazons" series on this list. In sorting books for our local library's
annual book sale I have found a copy in very good condition (as
described below):
Hardcover, slight marking on spine, some slight scuffing on cover,
childs (owner?) name on inside of cover, price sticker. This is the
Jonathon Cape original edition, thirty-fourth impression 1964,
illustrated by the author with help from Miss Nancy Beckett. $40.00
including shipping. If you think this is too much, check out Abebooks.
