That's worth knowing, thanks. I'm sure PC Bolger would never have
concealed its origin -- he always seems to be very willing to
acknowledge the influence of others and in this case it looks like it
was a specific requirement of the client.

Mine is the 8th ed. dated 1973. It cost me $18, which probably seemed
a lot at the time. The launch, a 1940 design, features in Ch.
XII "Planing Powerboats", pp. 110-111.
It seems even that great yacht-design house wasn't perfect:
alteration A to the design adds shallow wedges of timber aft to add a
bit of a hook to the buttock lines, no doubt to remedy a too-bow-high
planing attitude.

Howard,
The article states:
"BLACKBIRD" evolved on the image of the 40' launch ESCORT, which Al
Mason designed in about 1940 when he worked at Sparkman & Stephens."

It is beautiful, but nowhere have I seen acknowledgement that its
styling is taken directly from the 40' Sparkman and Stephens 40'
inboard launch whose lines and profile appear in Francis F.
Kenney's "Skene's Elements of Yacht Design". I suspect Stephens in
turn took the styling from a standard navy launch.

Looks like it has an article on the Gloucester Gull,
too.

I was so smitten by Blackbird I forgot to add there is also a 4 page
spread on Bolger's Gloucester Light Dory (also on the cover)

I just received a publication I ordered from WoodenBoat magazine
called "Small Boats". It descibes 25 boats one of which is Bolger's
Blackbird.
The magazine describes Blackbird as "Likely the most beautiful
outboard cruiser ever designed." I tend to agree. Only 4 pages are
dedicted to this one boat, but I thought Bolgeristas might be
interested any way.
I think the publication will be avaiable on newsstands, but I got it
from WoodenBoat here:

Note: That is Blackbird on the cover.
