Hi Nels,

Yes,ANEMONE got a huge steel plated bolted to her bottom. I think
Jean has pictures somewhere of how he installed it. The job is simple
in concept and in practice,BUT heavy as hell. You really have to be
prepared to work with big,heavy things.Simple yes,easy....not
necessarily if you ain't ready for it :-)

Did ANENOME get the steel bottom treatment? And if so - how did that
part go?

I still have a problem getting my head around how that is
accomplished. Susanne makes it sound so simple in her writings yet it
seems difficult for me to visualize. Any photos out there of it being
done?

Does ANTISPRAY qualify as a sharpie? It is bigger at 48' but there is
one abuilding as we speak and it is definetly steel!

Then there was one called SOLUTION 48? And WOLFTRAP - Which was
actually aluminum.

Hi Bob,
Can't answer your question but wonder why the steel requirement?
If it is for unfettered happy groundings and beachings, it may be
worthwhile noting that the AS-29 and AS-39 now come with steel plated
bottoms serving as both ballast and protection.Otherwise, they are all
made out of that godaweful, renewable, stinky, dusty stuff that appears
to spread like the plague wherever there is dirt.About the only good
thing one can say about this stuff is that it is warm to the
touch, pleasing to the eye, submits to glue, sharp tools and has the
magical ability to seductively convince total strangers they can
really build anything out of it. Imagine the nerve of it! :-D

Sincerely,

The nearest to this I know of is Lion's Paw, the subject of a chapter
in "30-Odd Boats". It's a simple steel box shape like AS29 etc but the
sides are flared and the bow comes to a point rather than a narrow
transom. It's 38'9" x 9'2" (or 10' over the leeboar guards), with a
draft of 1'9"/5'9" (leeboard up/down. It's a gaff schooner of 15,000
lnb displacement, meant to be built instant-boat-style. with the flat
panels cut to shape, then the sides erected and welded in place.
Sounds easy doesn't it?

There doesn't seem to be quite full headroom under its raised deck.

Was there ever a steel version of either AS29 or AS39? I know he did a
45 footer (6-8 wide) but is there one in the same basic AS shape (8'
wide) that was steel? We're selling our keel boat and going back to
shoal draft. Thank you. Bob G. S/V "Plan A" Panama City
