Crass commercial

Sometime ago there was a thread about digital communication off
shore. Datalink Systems now has one working that is expensive
but not out of sight. The cost for data is about $0.001 per
character. This is outrageously expensive for surfing the web
but it would be affordable for limited email. It would be much
less expensive it went through a email server that stripped off
the
headers and just included the subject, text and the sender and
dropped all the rest of the stuff.

The cost of a satellite transceiver is about $1,000 USD I
think. I don't know if we were discussing
wholesale or retail cost on the transceiver.

It covers the western hemisphere from the arctic circle to the
equator.

For more info look athttp://www.rfdata.net/satlink/

Disclaimer: I am not actively involved with Datalink but I do
own a substantial amount of stock in it. The information on the
web page it not aimed at boating but the information is of
interest to boaters. Datalink is not involved in the hardware
side of the link it is software and CPUs that connect through
the transceiver. We do make equipment that could be used for
tracking, security alarms, messaging and cataloging. I don't
think that the live abords are a market for most of what we do.
I am posting this because it does provided a digital link on
extended cruises. I think for most uses amateur radio would be
a much less expensive solution.

I think the satellite link would be worth considering for
racers and single handers or anyone it a high risk situation.
Tracking with out the risk of others in the race over hearing
the positions might be of interest in some cases. Again I point
out that we don't sell transceivers or receive any income from
the data charge. I am posting this because I think the off
shore digital link might be of interest to some members. I am
not trying to sell Datalink's products
