Re: [bolger] Mast and spars wood...

Thanks guys!!
I did a bit more digging ignored ther local advice from the local lumberyard and
rang their headoffice and spoke to one of thier experts who told me what to ask
for.... I went back to the store with the fresh info and told them that they do
sell Douglas Fir, they checked and said, "well gee whiz, so we do!!" I managed
to place an order today for one third of the price I had been quoted.
Lumber is more expensive in England because virtually all of it is imported.

Ouch!!

Western Canada - Construction grade Doug Fir (S-Grn 2 + BTR) approx C$1.50
per Board Foot.
Around here 'green' stock sits on the stacks so long that the outside stuff
is nicely air dried :)

Clear S4S Doug Fir approx C$6.00 Bd Ft.

Mahogany (Honduran, roughsawn) approx C$9.00 Bd Ft.

Glancing at the plans it looks like there's about 50 board feet in Micro's
spars (ignoring hollow centres). Assuming my math holds up, thats about
GBP30 to GPB120 for Doug Fir all in. At the top grade the waste would be so
minimal as to be negligible. I guess I'll stop whining about lumber prices,
at least for a while :)

I built the birdsmouthed mast for our Nymph from the local building stock -
very similar to the Sitka I used to buy in the UK, and it is holding up well
under my abuses.

My 2 cents worth? - Payson says 'use whatever is available locally' (I'm
paraphrasing). Reading the lumber stamps is usually more informative than
talking to the staff at B&Q/Home Depot at al.

I can get you guys a source of rough cut GREEN lumber in Petersburg. It would
have to go on a barge to Seattle and by truck to wherever. I has to be
stickered properly and the ends coated so you don't get them spliting out to
bad. I always have something drying in the back yard or in the shop. My window
sills and base boards for this new house are out there, "some assembly
required". Clear yellow cedar and hemlock , with the yellow cedar at $1.50 a
board foot and less depending on demensions and the hemlock cheaper still. I
don't know his spruce prices , but it is a lot more common than cedar. I have
some 2X spruce in the shop rack that I am going to use for the cartopper/ gypsy
masts that I got for $.80 a board foot on a deal from a local mill. Check out
your local part time mills. If you got patience you can get some neat stuff,
that might not be traditional boat building wood but will work well any way.

I am up against the same thing, and I am thinking about using Western Red
Cedar (similar to Redwood) for spars, then fiberglassing them for the
additional strength & hardness needed. Should amount to more work/less
labor. On the other hand some pines are as strong as DF, just heavier.

I have just got a quote for the Douglas Fir (spruce was more expensive) I will
want for my masts and spars and was quoted US$340 ish (plus UK sales tax)... Is
this expensive? It sure seems it to me!! My local Home Depot type store only
stocks Russian/Scandanavian Redwood and other undefined "pine" or "softwoods"
which are much cheaper... Can I use this type of wood??

In Douglas Fir my main mast alone would be US$200
