Re: Walkure in Mobile

Just a small adendum to Greg Carlsons post.
Pirates Cove, that last I heard was still suffering from Ivan and Katrina. If they are up and running be aware that they usually do not oprn during the week in the winter. The channel to the bayou runs on the east side of Pirates Cove. Go in slow as it is narrow but plenty deep. Use a good mud anchor as the holding in the bayou is a little insecure. While on your way in check the docks, there may be an open slip. Across the bay thers is another marine, Bears point I think is the name of the land mass, not the marina. there is more access to the land based facilities there than at Pirates Cove.
You could also continue on the the Bridge about 5 miles further along the ICW. Here you will find just about anything you want without being in a highly populated area. However transportatin is by taxi only. Personally, I might stop for an overnight break and dinner then I would go on to Bayou Chico.
While in Bayou Chico, stop at Browns Marine, the first marina on your port side after passing the bridge into bayou chico. Beware of the dock master, he is lacking in the social graces. But do look up John Cammaroto, he lives on a Person 36 tied to one of their docks. Tell John JJ sent you. He has wheels, like to socalize in the evenings, and knows everything there is to know about Pensacola marine resources. After John shows you the best resturants and watering holes, you may never leave Pansacola!!!!

Hi Mike,
We would have loved to meet you - that's our stomping grounds. We just
left Dog River and are up the Bon Secour River on the east side of the
bay, at a friend's private dock:
http://www.carlsondesign.com/alligator.html
Right now, we're home getting some stuff done. Man, you're killing me!
Fairhope is awfully nice, and I think somewhat repaired after Katrina.
If you can get across Week's Bay (?) and up the Magnolia River; it's
gorgeous, though we haven't tried the marine route ourselves without
help - shallow, but I've seen some big boats up the river.
It's a looong way across the bay at 5-6 knots; if you run out of
daylight after crossing, you could duck up the Bon Secour. Stay out of
Oyster Bay. On east, you'll want to anchor in Ingraham's Bayou and
dinghy over to Pirate's Cove Bar, or anchor behind the bar up the
sizable bayou. Pics on my log.
You can sail in Perdido Bay, then head over to Grand (Big) Lagoon at
Pensacola. If the wind's out of the south, anchor just east of Redfish
Point, and walk over your private beach to the gulf. If you get a
north breeze, go over between Robertson Island and Ft. McRee. Don't
risk the natural pass to its east - opened up by Ivan - go back around
Robertson and use the PNS land cut. Then, sail the bay and head up to
Bayou Chico near downtown and get some seafood from Joe Patti's.
If you have a club membership, tie up at the PYC, if not anchor in the
bayou or tie up at Bahia Mar for a few nights. Xmas in PNS is
fantastic - some years they bring in chipped ice downtown and have
snowball fights, etc. (Hopefully, ice will still be a *novelty* after
all these fronts passing Oklahoma come through the coast!)
Then, heading SE across PNS Bay, Little Sabine to the west of the
bridge is good for shoal draft and fishing bend (Pensacola Beach) to
the east a little roomier. On east through the ICW is all fantastic -
to the narrows opening into Destin - plenty of anchorages. It's fairly
remote through there, except for Navarre, so you want to plan for that.
Ok, then on to Destin...whoops!...sorry for just taking over your
cruise!!! Just don't tarry in Mobile too long; you're heading for some
of the least known but best cruising grounds around (jealous ;-).
If we don't get down there during your cruise, let us know if you need
anything - we have lots of connections down there.

Hi
Any chance you will swing through the Pensacola area?
You ought to swing by Pirates Cove (Alabama) on Perido Bay, which is about
halfway between Mobile and Pensacola.
It is a neat little cove, accessed by a really short/small creek from the
main bay....a tight fit to get in but I have seen some pretty darn big sailboats
in it.... certainly signifcantly bigger than yours....actually there is a
really nice and big wooden masted schooner? that "lives" in the cove
The neat thing there is that there is a pretty low key/easy going
resteraunt/bar RIGHT there and often a fair number of sailboats hanging out on a nice
weekend....
If you end up staying somewhere in Pensacola/Pensacola bay for a bit I might
like to swing by and have a look at your pride and joy....I'll even bring
the digital camera and snap some photos for you/the group if you'd like...
take care

The AS-29 "Walkure" will be in Mobile from today until the end of next
week. We're at the Dog River Marina. If any Bolgeristas in the area
want to stop by and visit we'd love to see you.

Since June 16th, Walkure has traveled 2878 miles through upstate NY,
Canada, the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi, up the Ohio (yuck) up
the Tennessee and down the Tombigbee to Mobile.
We're going to do a little R&R plus some routine maintenance while
we're here. We're also going to add a hard bimini/pilot house a'la
"Pandora," to give us some protection from the southern sun and the
wind and spray during the crossing to the Keys. We will be taking the
"inside" route from here to Florida, so any Bolgeristas along the
panhandle or the west coast of Florida should keep track of our
progress and pay us a visit as we pass your area.
