It may be winter in your wasteland but here in Florida the water is
warm.Inviting too for a Canadian visitor spending a few days aboard
Pelican , my stretched 26 foot Bantam. He thought he could enjoy a
private skinny dip at that isolated anchorage but homeland security
has not failed us. After a two week cruise which took him 40 miles
north to Melborne and 20 south to Stuart and Lake Okeechobee he's
very impressed with the Bantam. He slithered into some super
shallows, 9 inches with the auxillary 2hp Honda and stayed up with
the megayachts on the Intracoastal. The bugs weren't bad and when it
rained the boat didn't leak.He ran an experimental sailing rig from
a windsurfer on a breezy day heading north from Stuart. He reported
a good boost to the Bantam but unfortunately the two piece aluminum
( that aluminium for you canucks) snapped during a gust. He used
hardly any gas running the yamaha 9.9 at 2,500 rpm and carried a
kayak andf bicycle for shore visits. When he wasnt at the ramp to
meet me yesterday I called his cell. The police are checking the boat
he muttered. For you Canadians who think you can escape to our
paradise let this be a caution. You can come but you cannot hide,
Homeland security is very effecient.Right here in Fort Pierce we
have the U.S.Coast Guard station, the Florida Marine Patrol, The St,
Lucie County Sheriffs department and the Fort Pierce City Police,
All these agencies are equiped with the latest go fast high tech
boats and equipment either confiscated from drug runners or donated
by local boat maunfacturers. How was our hapless Canadian guest to
know that a 26 foot Twin Vee catamaran with twin 250 Mercury 4
strokes and two deputies aboard could, with the help of power tilt,
get into the same small backwater he was in.They blindsided me and
those idling outboards were so danged quiet, the inocent protested.
I didn't see them till they asked if I had any clothes on.They asked
me if I had any concealed weapons. I said obviously not.I was so
flustered it took me a while to find my i.d and registration. They
were very couteous however and asked if the boat was homebuilt. They
asked me if I was a nudist. No, I said, I'm a Bolgerist
