Re: Micro's weight vs. plywood thickness

Without knowing"exactly"what my MICRO weighs empty I can say with
certainty that loaded for the weekend she still floats high enough to
keep the drain holes,of the free-flooding wells, out of the water. The
bottom and all bulkheads were built using half inch plywood while the
sides, cocpit floor and cabin"roof" were built with 3/8inch
plywood.Furthermore, the scantlings for the chine logs and sheer
clamps were increased by 1/2 inch, the deadwood was all laminated
mahogany with a keelson to boot and all sorts of little touches were
added like laminated mahogany transverse deck beams,1/2 inch berth
flats, pine ceiling in the cabin etc.....Also,the entire hull
consumned many gallons of epoxy sealer(inside and out).By the way,all
the plywood was marine grade fir MDO and the spars from clear white
spruce. And finally, the bottom(up to the water line) was sheathed in
epoxy/glass as were the cocpit and cabin top.
Despite all of this apparent"added" weight(it sure caused me some
tense moments just prior to launching her with visions of her sinking
way too low in the water!) she floated off her craddle and damned if
she did not sit right on the designers marks!Go figure!
Anyway, that's my contribution to the ever expanding folklore
surrounding the MICRO.
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan,
spending every moment possible on board and already up to 7 nights
sleeping on board for the season with dreams of bigger things to
come,on the cold muddy waters of the St.Lawrence.....

Too bad I couldn't get involved in the discussions about the Micro,
I've been just too busy in the last few weeks (I'm just back from
Rome, and I'm going to Paris tomorrow morning)...
Anyway, fellow Micro builders, going from 1/4" fir to 3/8" okoumé
ply
is a pretty minor weight increase, certainly much less than 400
pounds! Yes, my okoumé is 50% thicker but it's also about 30% less
dense than fir... Now, if a whole "standard" Micro is 865 lbs, the
wood is 665 lbs, including spars and framing...
The total weight of my 11 plywood sheets was about 250 kg, which
includes the double bottom. I'd imagine a waste factor of 20% more or
less, which means about 50 kg... With a good safety margin, I can't
imagine my Micro weighing much more than 450 kg, i.e. about 1000
pounds.
Best, Pippo
