It seems like the ideal solution might be that there are more than one
messabout so people won't have to travel so far. As far as eastern NC
the waters are great but the combination of waters and a good site are
rare and are diminishing as development grows. I have hosted an annual
gathering for kayak and canoe sailors at Cedar Island NC every October
for 16 years. Others in my industry have looked for a similar place in
the mid Atlantic without much success. A lot of this depends on
personal preferences. If the participants want a variety of
restaurants and motels and bed and breakfast type options. Beaufort is
good. For shore side socializing or shop hopping for non boating
spouses it is a good place. On the other hand parking is not great
and there is limited shore. If the expectation of the participants is
mostly social and heavily weighted toward tourist amenities and shops
it argues for Beaufort NC. If on the other hand boating is the primary
focus, I can highly recommend Cedar Island. We hold our gathering at
the Driftwood Motel and Campground. The campground is on the water and
does not really have a beach but has docks and a boat ramp There are
two or three other public ramps on the island. The end of Cedar Island
Bay where the campground is situated is narrow and protected surrounded
by beautiful salt marsh. Ideal for paddlers and rowers and small
sailboats. The bay gets wider to the east and opens into the Core
Sound which is relatively shallow open water. Cedar Island Bay is
great for sailing and also human powered craft in calmer conditions.
In many ways it is the perfect site for the boating aspect. I lived
there for 9 years and I can not think of a better place to sail on the
middle east coast. The motel and campground are reasonably priced and
on either side of the road leading to the Cedar Island Ferry which goes
to Ocracoke.
There are however downsides. It is 30 miles beyond Beaufort and not
really close to anywhere. The motel though clean is very basic with
not even phones in the rooms. The natural beauty there is tempered by
irritants like mosquitos, particularly in the summer. It is best in
Spring and Autumn but even then you can have weather and strong winds.
On average though over 16 years we have mostly good boating conditions.
The boat ramp at the campground is a bit shallow but useable. The
restaurant is decent but only offers a basic continental breakfast for
morning eating. There is no place quite like it. Near perfect for
boating and acceptable accommodations for motel or camp types. Whether
for messabout or not if you are in the area check it out with your
boat.

I'm in for something around the Pamlico. I'll have the Chebacco down
there all summer anyway if I can find a spot for it. I'd think maybe the
Wooden Boat group in Beaufort might be a help with locating a suitable
spot, but there's also a launch area on Dawson creek just up from Oriental
inside the bridge. If we could find a suitable area near there that's
great protected water.
Count me in anyway. Boudicea will be present. Sounds to me like there'll
probably be a couple different meetings going on anyway since the SE is
such a large area.

How about Cape Lookout National Seashore (NC):
http://www.nps.gov/calo
You can only get to it by boat (ok, by ferry as well, but that's
cheating...), you can camp right on the beach...

How about one of the rivers off Pamlico Sound? Lots
of water to explore for the big/fast boat guys, plenty
of nearby open water for shoal-draft sailing, but
protected for the little boat guys. I don't know
about shore access, etc. around New Bern or
Washington, N.C., but sombody on this group might.

So we're talking about memorial day week-end? in Beauford NC? Or somewhere in SC. I live on Lake Hartwell in western SC. It has 986 miles of shoreline, not sure of wind conditions as I don't sail. Big water around the Dam. Should I look into aroud here or does some one have another idea?
We need some input from list members if this is going to happen.

Anyone can come with any boat or no boat at all.
No particular schedule except for maybe a group meal.
Lots of looking, talking, and playing in boats.
Being from South Georgia, and having a larger boat to trailer,
I'd favor SC over NC.
I love cruising tidal creeks and rivers,
and believe lakes can be pretty bland,
but for a messabout, you can't beat a
campground on protected wide water.
That way sailors, rowers, paddlers, and
motorboaters, all get to play. Most of the
good stuff at a messabout happens on the
shore anyway.
Let's not drop this thread. Let's pick location central to
those who have expressed interest that has the features
for a boat gathering. When is memorial day?
I, for one, am excited about the possibilities so far.

Having been to the MIDWEST messabout several times, I think do it perfectly.

It's been a few years, but my memories of boating around Beaufort, SC
involved some pretty strong tidal currents, I've never been to Beaufort,
NC, but it looks like the tidal range is only 2-4 feet vs. 6-10 feet in
SC, so there's a good chance it's more manageable. Have to go with
local knowledge on that. Perhaps the date could be chosen around
favorable tides if that's an issue.
From the NPS site <http://www.nps.gov/calo/> :
Proper consideration of tides at the seashore will make or break a trip.
Learning how to read and use a tide can make the difference between
paddling with or against a 3 knot current. The best bet for most people
is to leave the mainland at high tide and work with the current towards
the banks, returning as the low tide rises.
Anyway, I'm game. I really like the idea of doing it as a primitive
camping outing. Heck, I'm putting it on my list of things to do with
or without you guys.

I'd stay aboard where ever it was held, shackleford banks is awesome
for camping but can be tough for a little boat to get to, not to
mention time consuming. One of the neatest trips in the area....you
can pole and motor through the harlowe canal to newbern which is a
nice sailing area.

Beaufort, NC, my home waters for the last 20 years, is a great area
for boating and messing about in particular, but it presents some
challenges (currents, boat traffic, access). I'd be interested in
attending, and maybe even up for primitive camping. Might even prompt
me to knock out a Windsprint in time for it (as I'm a Bolger-boat-free
lurker here!). I also keep a 20' center console runabout down there
that could act as a bit of a support boat to quickly help with
capsizes, emergencies etc., which I could probably talk my wife into
commanding if I'm sailing :).
Cheers,
Neil Simms
Carrboro, NC
P.S. Here's a link for info on primitive camping on the banks:
http://www.nps.gov/archive/calo/camp.htm
One issue here is you would have to get a (free) camping permit either
from the lighthouse (on Cape Lookout, accessible only by boat) or on
Harkers Island (a bit of a drive from Beaufort)...

Well, I'm not sure what the original intention here was, but I thought
we were speaking of Beaufort, S.C. You know, the real southeast! I
personally would be less inclined to go up to Beaufort, N.C. from
Savannah. My two cents, of course.

Hi Guys...
Not trying to hijack your messabout plans but how about this sometime in the
future..
A messabout somewhere between Mobile Alabama and Panama City Florida,
centering roughly on Pensacola, Florida.
Going from West to East, You have Mobile Bay, Perdido Bay, Pensacola/East
Bay, Chalktaw (how its pronounced not how its spelled) Bay, Saint Andrews Bay,
and then also Port St Joe with Appalachacola Bay.
These are are pretty nice big bays that can easily use up a whole day just
messing around in...and much more than that if you start exloring the nooks
and crannies along the edges.
There are plenty of state and national parks along the way, with a few of em
actually on the water. Hotels and marina's ranging from something a poor
working bubba can afford to something that would make Thurston Howell proud.
Neat resteraunts and bars and touristy stuff accessable by marina or within
walking distance of one. Plenty of local non water related stuff to see and do if
you rent or bring a car so the non-boating family members can have fun as
well.
Plenty of more sheltered area's to moore you boat if gonna sleep in it and
not be at a marina or state park.
These bays are connected by "sounds" ...which are kinda like very long
skinny bays between the mainland and the barrier islands...and some short sections
of the manmade/man enhanced intercoastal waterway....So you can stay
totally outa that big nasty ocean/gulf if you are worried...there is also pretty
much a channel/pass to the gulf for every bay...so if you want to hop from one
bay to the next by way of the gulf..thats certainly doable in a day with
reasonable safety using a little prudence..and if you ever have to get onshore or
run aground...its gonna be nice soft sand and probably some helping hands
within waving distance if you need it.
The beaches in this area are some of the prettiest around...our
rivers/creeks run very clear and non silty...so the bays and ocean water nearby are
often surprising clear....the beachs literally look like they are made of coarse
white sugar.
A messabout somewhere up along the east coast as you guys are describing is
probably a good deal for you guys in that area and people further north.
However, a messabout in our area is within a decent driving distance of a
fair bit texas, south central us, southeast us, east us, and most of florida.
I am not suggesting doing this INSTEAD of an east coast messabout....unless
of course most of the folks that would go to that would still come here...then
that would probably attract a fair number of folks from the areas I have
described and make an even bigger better gathering.
What would probably make more sense than a one weekend messabout here would
probably be a short messabout "season" spanning something like 3 to 6 weeks.
The people with more liesure time could start west and head east liesurely (or
visa versa) and while other folks could just come down for whatever weekend
looks best. Obviously not everyone would be here at the same time, but a
larger total number would get to probably come down and interact with other
fellow enthusiasts than if you try to force it to be on one particular weekend.
I hate to sound like the tourist board here...but I'd have to say this is
probably some of the best cruising around ground around....and all concentrated
in a pretty short stretch of coastline to boot. Take a look at a map and
you'll see what I mean.
Just some thoughts
take care

Also, more interested in sailing along the Beaufort waterfront, within
the narrow channels in the sound inside the banks, on the Neuse River (a

I was in Beaufort last July 4th for the tall ships -- it was scary --
too many motor boats moving too fast. I got swamped by big weird waves
around the turning mark between Beaufort and Morehead City. I imagine
most July 4th weekends are not so crazy, but still I'd prefer to avoid
that particular weekend. Memorial day weekend would give people the
opportunity to take advantage of a 3-day weekend, the water is
comfortable, there is still a chance of wind (not quite into the summer
doldrums). Would that be a good weekend for everyone?

The only problem with the NC coast is that NC's road network is laid out so that all roads lead to Raliegh and unless you go to Raliegh first, you can hardly get to the coast. (O K. Maybe this is an exageration, but a quick look at a map will show that it is not much of an exageration.) I agree that wind on southeastern inland lakes is often lacking. However, if anyone is interestd, I have access to the Lake Murray Sailing Club near Chapin, SC and about 10 miles off I-26.

Beaufort NC or further down east as far out as Cedar Island NC, would
be the place I would be most likely to attend. Most of the inland
lakes in the SE are so windless in the summer. Beaufort would be a
great location and a nice place for short cruises but also more likely
to have sailing wind.

I'd be up for hauling the Chebacco somewhere in the southeast. How about
Beaufort NC?
They've got a good wooden boat association there and a number of places
around to camp & launch.
