curved to me. Albeit, curved
in two, not three, dimensions,
never-the-less, the water would
experience a curve.
The bow transom is flat, but it is
pretty much above the waterline, and
it really isn't that big.

And it is precisely that "flat bottom forward" that allows the
MICRO(Queen of the fleet!) to carry much more volume further forward
thus rising quicker to the waves.Incredible bouyancy! Where I
sail, you really want to avoid having yourself splashed with
pollution.Besides, who wants St.Lawrence river water in their robust
Bordeaux while chomping down on a nice crusty bagette?
Perhaps the Chebacco Crowd are die-hard sailors for whom the
more genteel pleasures available afloat are of little concern and the
high points of a days sail are measured in wave height instead of
some much sought after gustatory ecstasy? That magical chemistry
arrived at through the copious ingestion of finely fermented foods
like bread, cheese and wine...yuuuuummmm.....the mere thought of which
almost has me drooling like an idiot! Then again, perhaps they are just
crazy?
Anyhow,I am a wee bit biased but nevertheless sincere in my
honest appraisal of the MICRO. I can't wait to read Bruces' report on
his Navigator version once he has taken her out a few times!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, never more then a short hop, skip and jump from complete
insanity, along the shores of the SUNNY St.Lawrence........:-)

where it stuffs the bow into a wave and comes to a halt. I think it
will happen a lot more to a Micro than to a Chebacco because of the
shorter length and greater amount of flat bottom forward. I read
Chebacco owners saying "my boat lives waves."

You need to bring that Chebacco down to Corpus Christi or Matagorda Bay some summer afternoon when the offshore breeze has been blowing 25-30 for a couple of hours. In fact, let me know, I'd like to be there too. Lots of fun.

And that works fine in flat water, where all the motion of the water is aft on the hull.
When you hit the big waves, the motion becomes up and down on the bow, causing enough turbulance and drag for sharpies to be famous
for not comming about in rough water.
There is not a lot of speed difference, as the extra drag is made up for by the extra sail carrying capacity of the flat bottom.
But, the pointy bow Chebacco is MUCH nicer to ride in big waves. I like to find the biggest ones I can, when the small craft
advisories are out, tie in a reef, and slog through the waves to see if I can splash the windows! :-)

I can reef and dereef my CLC in about a minute, standing in the cockpit, under the shelter of the hard dodger. I've even done it
while running before the wind, without heaving too.

Also, When I look at my Micro Navigator
in my shop, I see a very buoyant 'cork'
probably twice as buoyant as a Chebacco.
Micro looks to me to be nearly unsinkable.
The design spec for Navigator

the cabin, I still have bad dreams
about that night twenty years ago
sprawled on deck, reefing the main

I also imagine that the mass of the
Navigator's ballasted keel would tend
to stabilize or smooth out the 'toss around'
effect of a chop. The cabin is just
snug enough that you can push off the
walls and roof if you get tossed bad.
I don't know really, and guess I need
to build a Chebacco next to judge for
myself. :)

OK the Chebacco is nearing the finishing coat stages on paint and trim work. Spar building and launching is next this summer at the conclusion of which, I hope to have a better than production quality boat with a beautiful gunter rig that is more adjustable than a marconi, more reefable than a sprit or junk rig and which with the optional jib, offers at least 3 different sail combinations to mee most weather conditions. Who could ask for more than that?

I would say so. I don't think you get the whole 15.5 from the micro, where, at least with my CLC, you have just about the whole 20ft
in the water.
Also faster in low winds, way below hull speed.

I would, of course, have to disagree there...
A Chebacco will run circles around a Micro. Even with a reef in, dragging the motor, and towing a dingy. Been there, done that, got
the t-shirt.
Neither are beachable boats, but the 10" draft (board up) of the Chebacco makes finding a place to put the nose onto dry land a bit
easier than the 18" draft of the Micro.
I once ran downwind under full sail, neck and neck with a 20ft fiberglass keelboat running to 2-1/2 hp Honda full blast...
The light cruiser version of the Chebacco has about twice the interior space as the Micro. Or, at least, it sure feels like it
sitting in the pilot house.
Did I mention Chebaccos are fast?

Yes Bruce, lets close this evil poll that refuses to let me vote more
then once for the all time cutest little pocket yacht in any
marina, the masterfully designed MICRO. Not to diminish the obvious
beauty of the Chebacco,I might add that despite this she suffers from
being of relatively common stock. That is to say, alot of folks may not
readily recognize her.
Now the MICRO,on the other hand, stands out rather handsomely, from the
rest of the "pointy at one end and square at the other end" crowd. She
encourages further study from the casual observer and never fails to
impress,if not delight, all who have witnessed her gliding over the
waves with a happy smile under her nose!
MICRO!MICRO!MICRO! The Queen of the fleet!!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, nevertheless pleased that the Mighty Micro is holding
her own on the polls, despite multiple attempts at out right cheating
by yours truly, from along the thunderstorm threatened shores of the
St.Lawrence.............

Her are my votes, in slightly different catagories--
Prettiest: much to choose from, but the streched light
dory, from any angle, is a heartbreaker, and all from
flat plywood panels. Unbelievable.
Most fun per unit construction effort: has to be
Featherwind, with Dave Carnel's simplified rig--a
monkey could build one, a donkey (I'm the proof) can
sail one, and a cat couldn't help but smile at the way
she'll scoot along.
Current unrequited love (lust?)--Sitka Explorer.

Darn'it Bruce, I keep trying to uphold an old Canadian maritime
tradition by"voting early and voting often" but the upity poll
machine won't let me do it.Rats!! I guess the MICRO is going to have
to sink or swim on her own........as will WINDERMERE,YONDER and a few
others.........
What about WOLFPACK? PRANCING PONY?

Two boats I'd vote for, if I could:

Arbitrary, yes.
Two polls, one for big boats,
and another for small boats.
The difference being arbitrary,
but more or less determined
by whether they have a toilet. <g>
No limit on how many votes you make,

I didn't really get option 2, does that mean squelch the off topics,
or generaly be tolerant, unless they go too far. I voted anyway, and
so far we have about 4% response, so who knows?
