Hi Mike,

Thanks for this info.

John Welsford agrees with your claim about boats like this being able to plane a lot of weight. He designed a similar bottom with a long narrow planing shoe on Trover:

It looks like Jim Michalak used a planing shoe on Brucesboat too:

I like the 'planing shoe' feature, it gives the boat a flat bottom section on which to sit upright when beached. It also tends to keep people in the center of the boat since that's the only flat area to walk on, so I think it's a good safety feature for this reason as well.

Thanks Bruce, I appreciate this! I keep thinking I might have the time to learn FreeShip (some day?) but for now I'm very happy to just use it as a 'viewer' program for your .fbm files.

John Welsford actually calls this feature a "planing shoe" when he uses one on his Trover design:

Here's the link to JW's Trover for the complete writeup in case you're interested:

In comparison with Diablo's planing shoe which looks to be absolutely flat, Trover's planing shoe appears to have some rocker in its forward section. I wonder what the advantage / disadvantage may be in using some rocker vs. no rocker here?

I suspect that you're right about a writeup in MAIB or perhaps somewhere else. Hopefully there's a person in this group who will know where it is. With any luck it may already be online ... ?
