I strongly encourage you to build a Surf!

I recommend buying the plans, sold inexpensively by Harold Payson, at
http://www.instantboats.comThose plans include many useful details
and notes missing from my 3D Freeship study of the boat shape.

BTW, Freeship converts from Imperial units to Metric units with a
couple mouse clicks. But only you can take the initiative to learn
Freeship.

I have no idea about copyright and industrial protection laws in France.
Indeed, in the USA, these laws are complex, confusing and commonly
misunderstood.

I had an interesting conversation about this with copyright 'experts'
over at Wikimedia Commons last Fall. They are more stringent, in that
Wikimedia Commons disallows 'fair use'. Where, 'fair use' is
generally allowed in the wider USA.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Village_pump&oldid=3607565#Freeship_files.2C_boat_and_ship_3D_models.

I learned that 'industrial designs', like cars, boats and airplanes,
are not normally subject to wide protection. Though boat hulls have
limited exceptions written into law.

Read US Code Title 17, Chapter 13 §1301 et seq.

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode17/usc_sec_17_00001301----000-.html

Notice that §1305 limits that protection to 10 years.

Indeed, the paper plans seem to have more and longer legal protection
than the physical functional shape of the boat.
Dear Bruce,
I think 59SF sail is * enough * for real sea service, but seems that many people are using bolger boats rather in lakes where capsizing less dramatic...
On the other hand, any hull (even box boats) would become very "lively" providing increasing of sail surface, no ?
However if you like to keep safe in that case maybe solution is to turn Surf into a sailing outrigger canoe (I mean it is a comfortable canoe because sharpie hull form and convenient beam) or a three-board tacking outrigger ?. For the sail you could use for instance one of those lovely Jukung sails like same used in Bali, so the combination of the exotic sail and the good looking false stem would make the whole thing looking like "Pirats of the Pacific season III" ..
Think about it if you want to leave good feelings to the natives...

N-B: I see that you are fluent in Freeship software use.
I would like to build "SURF" but it should be more convenient if i could dispose more accurate drawings(possibly metric)
Should it be possible that you send me for *private use only* a set of Freeship files for SURF including also extended panels and nesting for S&B building ?
Thanking you in advance,
Best Regards
Olivier SORS

I am a sucker for sweeping double ended sailboats. Plus, I like the
longwise thwart, for rowing located ahead of midships, and the sprawl
space cockpit for sailing located aft. I wonder if a 59SF sail is
enough, probably it is, because 59 SF is too much for my Teal.
