Re: [bolger] Doel Fins, Stingray hydrofoil

Doel Fin makes one for the smaller outboards that
wraps around the front of the drive leg. Stingray also
makes a smaller one for the smaller OBs as well.

I found with the Stingray my prop didn't ventlate at
slower speeds. But it did with the Doel Fin I think
the reason for that is the Stingray was longer and
covered more area over the top of the prop.

Yes they do help I've use them of two boats and they
did get me on plane faster and I could stay on plane
much slower speeds.

Seeeing how you are only doing 6 or so kts (I'm
guessing) they would do something just not sure how
much. The one thing you are going to want to do is A.
bolt the motor to the boat or B. come up with a way so
it will not lift off the transon. I was suprised when
I found my OB lifted about an inch.

Bob, I have had an outboard with the doelfins. They
are really designed to keep the stern up as the boat
transitions onto a plane, then sit right at the
surface where they can still provide lift but not so
much drag. I doubt at displacement speeds they would
give enough lift to be worthwhile, but then I never
had great luck with them, anyway. If your boat is
squatting, though, doesn't that indicate that the boat
has passed hull speed and is trying to climb out of
her own hole? Anyway, if you want a set, mine are
hanging on the wall--you can have them if you pay the
postage from Delaware, and you can try them out,if
they will fit. Mine came of an old evinrude 60 hp.

Anyone out there have first hand experience with either Doel fins or
Stingray hydrofoils. I am particularly interested in their
effectiveness to solve squatting. My particular boat is a displacement
hull so planing is not an issue.
