Re:Small cats?
Have you not considered any of James Wharram's
designs? I always liked the look of the Tiki series.

As an owner of a 35 foot wharram Tangaroa Mk 4 www.wharram.com the
closest to a small covered family cat he designs with cabins is the
Tiki 21. As far as athleticism goes, one learns to move slowly and
deliberately in a cat until you are used to the space. Speed means
pain. Ian Farrier designs a folding plywood tri www.f-boat.com that
are great family boats. In Bolger designs the Birdwatcher is worth
considering. In commercial sail/power monohull the macgregor 26
offers some big bang for the dollar especially in family comfort.
www.macgregor26.com.
Cats are narrow--tris have more room in one area.
All three mentioned above are available used and have active clubs
and association.Wharrams tend to be more europe.

Best looking small cats out there that I know of are the designs of Bill
Kristofferson. I would really like to build his K24 or C 24.

Thanks for the tip but, ewwww, looks like an alien spaceship, in a bad
way, not at all the simple project I was hoping for.
I'd rather have a Crabskiffamaran (or Surfamaran, has a nicer ring to
it) with Wharram-style lashed-on crossbeams and everyone sitting in the
hulls, kayak-style under a modest sail.
The question is, since I'd rather not have to put it all together each
time, how stable will the resulting 15' x 8' platform really be with
the weight distributed in the two hulls?
Anybody handy with one of those stability calculators to give me an
idea if this is even worth pursuing?
Cheers,
Matthew

You might check out Bernd Kohler's Economy cruiser or Eco 7. They
are more recent designs and are designed to be low cost family
cruisers. His web site is
http://www.ikarus342000.com/Catpage.htm
There is also a yahoo builders group (k-designs) and Bernd answers
questions there.

Not felines, or catboats, but catamarans...
Anyone have any thoughts on any small plywood catamaran designs,
probably not Bolger? There are a lot of them out there, but most are
more for a couple of athletic folks who don't mind getting wet, not a
family with small kids.
There are the Jarcats (very ugly) and a few others, including Jeff
Gilbert's Hot Chili (even uglier, sorry, I know some folks like that
one) and Thomas Firth Jones's Weekender (a possibility, but still too
sporting).
I am really looking around for something like my Junebugamaran or
Crabskiffamaran concepts, where folks would ride in the hulls, not on
the bridge deck, most of the time. The wide stance of a cat would be
nice with a low sailplan and enough room for everyone. I keep coming
back to the idea of a pair of those hulls, or maybe Pirate Racer
hulls (which already have side decks) with a couple of light cabin
trunks and modest rig.
