Re: Strip building materials

Will keep my eyes open for heavier strip plank stock. Will there be
a big change in the bevel required? what style hull are you
designing? round bilges obviously, but how tight. if it gets real
tight near the bow you may have an easier time planeing the bevel
than routing.

Hi Danial,
Thanks for the reply. I have looked ot your site and really like your
developed dories. As you say those boats use a pretty much constant
radius on the bilge and a constant bevel will work quite well. The
shape I am working on is a little more complex and I'd have to change
the bevel over the length at least in the area of the turn of the
bilge. Whether its worth milling all the wood (cove and bead) or just
beveling as required, first on the table saw and then adjusting the
bevel by hand, I,ll have to consider.
its early in the project here. I still have to finish the design.

Hi there JG
what size and shape are you looking to strip?
Kyak, fishing schooner, or somewhere in between?
I strip plank the Ipswich Bay 18' (photos section) class knock-about
and have no use for the cove and bead, I also don't need to plane
individual strips as the design has a constant radius chine, just
run the strips through the table saw set at a predetermined angle
and I'm done.

Jeff I have not seen anything like that I know they

I built a 16 ft strip canoe. Cut the strips myself on a table saw & bought a set of cove & bead router bits & set up 2 router tables. Took a while but all came out fine. Boat looks great. Only problem was it took me for ever to get the 2 different bits set to exactly the same height. when your working with only 1/4 " just a 64th is a huge error.

It would be my guess that to buy the tools to make your owen or barrow
the tools and just buy the bead and cove bits would be cheaper then
buying and shipping costs.
Tools needed are a table saw with a long extention on the back and
feather boards to keep wood lined up. Router with table and extentions
both ends and feathering boards to keep feed tight. One beed and one
cove bit.
You could be set up for under $500 if you bought everything and used
scrap wood for the extentions and feathering boards. To go first class
could easly cost $1500 with a spendy sawtable, shaper and cutting bits
to start your owen bead and cove busness. Any good wood working book on
use of woodworking tools can show you how simple it is to do.
