A couple of other thoughts. I think a bucket has been mentioned, hang it
of the stem with a weighted bottom. An anchoring pole/bowsprit to get
the pivot point well forward. A weighted bucket off the end of the
anchoring pole.
My first try would have been the answer below, rolling hitch on the
anchor line, let it out 15-20 feet and the other end to one of the aft
quarters. Worked for Hornblower.
