New Tortoise
Lazy summer vacation days at the lake quickly approaching, and my well
loved old Tortoise now ruined, (filled up with rain water and broke).
Anyway, I still got the sailing gear. Here are photos of my new
Tortoise. I know I am the loudest complainer, 'build it per the
plans', but mea culpa, I have decided on three 'improvements'... 1)
Wanting ultra light weight, I opted for 1/8" luaun plywood with
fiberglass sheathing ($9/sheet). 2) Wanting 'lean back/lounge chair'
comfort, I opted to curve the leading edge of the deck to eliminate
the 'cutting edge' problem on my shoulder blades while sailing. And
3) not visible yet in the photos, I am going to opt for the dagger
board on the outside of the hull, as mentioned in the Bolger chapter
on Tortoise in _Different Boats_. What you see is the result of 2
hours on Saturday and 4 hours on Sunday. I am losing count, but I
think this is Bolger boat #13 for me. My Topaz Spyder project, still
in the works, is now #14.
