Re: [bolger] SEA HAWK

I looked at this book twice, and finally bought it too. You are right, it is really worth the price for all the plans you get. Not much new and original material, but a good compilation of Dynamite's and Phil's work.

So I scanned a couple of information pages about the design and posted
them at this link, for those who may not be aware of this design.

Payson actually upgraded the plans from the original which called for
spiling the sides and has includs developed side panels and a 6 page
layout that give complete building instructions.

This design alone makes the book worth the price if one is interested
in a fishing skiff. It also has plans for several other skiffs
including DIABLE GRANDE both length CLAM SKIFFs as well as SNEAKEASY.

Nels and others,

I built a Seahawk Dory Skiff back in 1981 using plans purchased from
Harold Payson. The boat was (and is) a great success, although the
original Tohatsu 18 proved to be too much engine in certain
circumstances eg. running down-wind and down-wave at full throttle in
some seriously rough water off the North-Eastern Australian coast
around Townville. In fairness to the design, we were pushing her to do
things for which ishe was never designed.

Subsequently, she was re-equipped with a 7 1/2hp Honda and proved to be
a wonderful sea boat. In about three weeks time, I am going to retrieve
Seahawk from storage and will be restoring her once again. For this
latest incarnation, we have bought a brand-new Tohatsu 9.8, which at
60lbs/26kg should be an ideal engine - much lighter than most other
9.8's and 9.9's. (the Tohatsu 9.8 will also be going on our faithful
and much loved Bolger 'Bee')

I've got a fair number of photos of Seahawk (and Bee) in action, and
will try to post them when I've got the time to learn how.

I also intended to mention that SH is build on a simple strong back
over some station molds - similar to the original Light Dory and there
is the option of using chine logs or stitch and glue - which S&G would
seem to be the easist option - no beveling required, no threat of
water lying in the bilges and rotting the logs.
