Re: Superbrick Challenge Status?

Slowly. I told someone in another group today that I was in the
fourth year of my scheduled 18 month build and still am a year away
from launching.

Money, weather, time and health have all taken their turns getting in
my way.

At this point, the transoms, frames, bilge board and rudder are done
and I am working on the lower hull side panels. I hope to finish
them in the next month and begin working on the cut water. At that
point I will put the hull together and start working on the inside
and superstructure.

I keep moving ahead but obviously I am horrible at estimating build
time. This is my first large boat. I hope I still end up being the
first to finish one, though a couple of people have mentioned buying
plans and looking at beginning one but none have mentioned actually
starting construction.

I still have the pledged $20 in my pocket.

A messabout sounds like a good idea, an opportunity for all the
superbrick fans to come and see it. I will look into campgrounds.
I just found out that I will be keeping it at a private dock (my
boss offered the use of a slip on their dock at their lake house - a
good boss!) but I am not sure where its located yet.

I have been off the list too, was doing my semi-annual Superbrick
Challenge checkup and find this thread. Looking forward to paying my
$20 pledge in person since I can get there from NC easily.

How about a messabout at L. Lanier in October after it cools down?
Bald Ridge or Shady Grove campgrounds, unless there is a beter one
on the SE side of the lake.

What part of the world are you in? I would like to know where I have to
go to get my $50 ride.

When complete, rides will be available.

I planned on posting the launch date online so that anyone who wants
to come for the festivities can.

sails are supposed to arrive today or tomorrow from Polysails and I am
cutting frames today.

I am quite sure there is at least one or two more SUPERBRICKS either
in construction secretly or being contemplated. (Plans have been
purchased - models done etc.)

In fact there may be a whole underground SB cult operatiing below the
level of awareness even of their family and friends. (Wives should
especially be watching for tell-tale signs in a spouse. Furtive
activity in the backyard and an inability to look you in the eye when
you ask what they are doing may be one sign - but then most husbands
react that way out of habit anyway.)

Be on the lookout for strange structures appearing in a back yard near
you. It may even be hard to detect since if it is being built upside
down it may look like a quonset shed!

Thank you for the info I'll have to take a look at it
when I find my BWAOM I know it's here in this mess
someplace.

Good to hear from you again, as far as I know the challenge is still out
there. Somebody was talking about it a year ago, don't know if he
actually started. I believe I have a $50 pledge, go for it. Who knows if
there is a list anywhere, might have to go to the archives. Bruce Hector
might have it. Both you guys have been off list for a while but Bruce
has the Kingston messabout going this year.

You still linked up with Loose Moose?

Krissie, here is the Superbrick and the challenge on Duckworks.

http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/03/r/articles/superbrick/index.htm

Bruce Hector is the other Bruce H, a Canadian and a former frequent
contributer to this list. Here is a link to the Kingston messabout
featuring the TIMS if you want to see what kind of lighthearted
creativity he could come up with.

He is also the individual that came up with the idea of a Bolger box
aircraft carrier. When he starts building that one I start on my LMA
Taylorcraft.

Superbrick is a sailing houseboat/shanty boat with the hull based on a
scaled up brick hull, 20' x 8', with a lateen rig.

Its in BWAOM, p.365

Interior is similar to AS29, but a shorter, rectangular hull.
My superbrick is getting close to putting the lower hull together -
transoms, bilgeboard are built, working on the side panels now.
Several of the internal components will be built over the side
panels to get accurate bottom curves on them. I had been shooting
for August to put it in the water but its looking more like
September.

The rudder is ready to be painted and assembled and the sails have
been ordered from polysails.

pics will be posted when I have the lower hull put together.

No, never built the Amherst. Wanted to fall in love with it but came
to the realization that my Light Scooner gave us as much pleasure as
a swim platform as it did as a sail boat. The arrangements for
getting in and out of the Galley, and especially the water and sand
that would come with that never quite seemed right for how we use a
boat.

In the meanwhile, my wife has become much more open to the idea of
sailing offshore, including perhaps taking the kids out of school for
a few years. If we end up building something on the scale of the I60,
it's going to be a bluewater-capable boat. Professionally things are
shaping up in a way that could bring the building and using of such a
craft into the realm of possible.

In the meanwhile, if the Superbrick Challenge pot is high enough to
more or less cover the cost of material, I think I'm going to have to
build it. The only thing I'm not liking about my 74 Sportscoach is
that I can't park it in the middle of the Lake.

Last I knew, the pot was round a thousand dollars, but that was a few
years ago. The group is bigger now. I think the group should pay me
to build it. What do you all say?

FBBB,

Long time no see. I and my family are well. I hope all of you are too.

Sad news about the LSME. She was carried away in a storm late last
Autumn, swept onto a rocky beach, and finally came to rest in about
six feet of water. She was silted in pretty badly and all attempts to
raise her failed. Her final resting place was in a boat slip that was
desilted by crane last month, and LSME came up in pieces. In a
terribly ugly coincidence, the same crane failed a week later,
killing a young worker. I haven't been to the site since before the
accident.

I had a thought this AM as I drove my daughter to school. Perhaps the
thing I most want right now is a quite, comfortable, sheltered place
on the lake where I can sit and read, or nap. As I had this thought,
I remember the well-windowed forward bunk of the Superbrick, and in a
flash I saw myself anchored out with bottle of rum and my stack of
(as yet) unread Fortune and Atlantic magazines.

Is the Superbrick challenge still on? If so, what's the prize up to.
Has anyone worked up a bill of materials?

Love to all.

YIBB,
David
