Re: FORMER WEST EPOXY USERS
I just ordered 15 gal from AroMarine on E-bay for $585 free shipping
that workes out to $38 a gal. No blush.

The epoxy of choice for me, now, is the Low Viscosity Max Bond 1:1
sold by Polymer Products. I have recently gone through 10 gallons of
the stuff, and it has worked flawlessly. I will be buying more
shortly.
At a price of about $43 per gallon, delivered, I am real happy.

As a 20 year (?!!) West System customer, I recently used Aero Marine
Epoxy to great success. I like the 'no blush' aspect and, as windyjon
pointed out, the price is tough to beat.

Bill,
My 'epoxy of choice' is RAKA.
Typically, I use the 'hot' 5-to-1 ratio mix, but will vary that with the
lower ratio's as the ambient temperature demands.
That's one of the things I like about Larry's product. The base resin is
sort of 'universal', while the hardeners are specific. Also everything
is 'priced' in quarts. Therefore when I buy a 3 gallon 'Kit' {the most
economical increment for me} I can get, for example - '. . 2 Gallons
Resin, 2 quarts 'slow' hardener, 1 quart 'medium', and 1 quart 'fast'
{5-to-1} hardener's. Also, the hardeners can be mixed to 'fine tune' the
final result to YOUR SPECIFIC requirements.

Or, as the RAKA guy claims, it wasn't blush at all but some other sort
of problem. He figures I didn't get the mix right or something, but that
doesn't explain why the underneath part seemed to cure right enough,
just the top 1/16" was a mess.

I started with RAKA on my Windsprint and had blush problems beyond all
comprehension. I scrubbed with Scotchbrite and everything else I could
think of, until I had very sore shoulders. Scraping with broken glass
might have helped, but I didn't read about that soon enough. I had big
sections of fiberglass peeling off the bottom for three or four years.
Finally quit trying to scrape off barnacles when I come back from a

I switched to System 3 and that seemed to be OK. I used MAS for my CLC
kayaks, and other projects and was extremely happy. No blush problems at
all. For a school boat-building project I recently tried RAKA again and
haven't had a problem with it. Either they changed their formulation or
humidity hasn't been as high lately.

I too am useing Aro Marine on a 32" sternwheeler. What I realy like
about it is that it is fresh when you get it. He packages it at time if
shipping and you are not paying for all the frills and addvertisments

I have not used West in years. I have Raka in the shop right now, I have
also used system three. I have used both on the same project, though I
do not mix products in mixing of course. The one west product that I
still buy is MicroLite. I honestly cannot tell any difference. The Raka
tends to go off pretty fast in my shop, but it is really good outside
and in cold shops. I like it because it is cheep, comes in the mail and
is relatively inexpensive.

First post, but long time lurker ...
I've used System Three products for everything for at least ten years.
Easy to measure since it's 2:1 mix. I use #2 hardener even in the winter
here in the PNW. When it's cold it takes several days to cure, but
doesn't seem to have any bad effects. My only negative comment is that
their Silica thickener tends to clump in the package making it a little
hard to measure. Gave up on West products years ago.

I used System Three to build my AS-29 and it worked
great. I now live aboard the boat and have logged over
3000 NM in her.
It's hard to find System Three at any retail outlet,
you have to buy it mailorder. For small repairs I use
WEST as it seems to be the only stuff you can buy
retail.

I've used Raca with great success and significant savings over the West

I've also used Everstar epoxy which is a bit cheaper than the West, but I
like the fact that it red tinted and
turns pink when sanded which shows a lot of visual indications when fairing.
product.
I've also used Everstar epoxy which is a bit cheaper than the West, but I
like the fact that it red tinted and
turns pink when sanded which shows a lot of visual indications when fairing.

I used to use west and the cost was prohibitive. I switched last
year to using a non-blushing epoxy sold on ebay by aeromarine
products. currently 15 gallons delivered is less than US$600 and I
have had great results so far and there is no problem with blush
when applying more epoxy to cured epoxy surfaces. I have tested a
few samples to destruction and it seems every bit as durable as the
west at 1/3 the price.
I also have a hull started by another builder 18 years ago and I
believe he said he used system 3 on it and its in great shape. The
only delamination was one epoxy starved joint at the breast hook
where the plywood is under the greatest stress.

Mornin',
Hopefully my sneakeasy plans will be here today and so the
journey begins. My only pre-thought is about the extensive epoxy
use. Now I've replaced the bow section (the hole was large enough to
crawl thru) of a 53' trawler and installed a bow thruster in the
process all using west epoxy. Probably used 30+ gallons of the stuff
since 1990 on various projects of one kind or another. Now that I'm
hopefully a little smarter and not as fool hardy with my money, West
Epoxy IS expensive. The question: Is there any former west epoxy
users out there that have switched to a less expensive epoxy(Raka,
System Three, etc.....) and still have the same excellent results that
west gives? I've already searched the epoxy question before and it
tends to be vague. I'm looking for cost, ease of use, quality of
product.
Thanks,
Bill
