Re: June Bug - school project
Thanks all. It was a hoot!
I hadn't thought of the "what better teacher for kids with behavioral
problems" angle. I have no problems with MY behavior. And yes, Peter
Lenihan will be invited as a guest speaker next year. LOL!
He can motor upriver in his Windemere and show them some good
construction for a change.

It was great to see those pictures of kids building a boat. It
brought back memories of building three boats with my grandfather and
dad when I was a kid.
Great project! Those kids have something to be proud of and a memory
they will hold the rest of thier lives...Kudos

Hey good to hear the JB worked out! Yes it is good for
kids to see what they can do with their OWN hands when
they put their minds to it.
Myself I have dyslixia and school sucked! Yet when I
got into the shop classed I had As and Bs, any of the
rest of my classes I just squeeked by. But when I took
the tests for the GED when I was in the army I was in
the top 10% of the state of Washington that year.
To be honest I was bored in the classroom and not
understanding the things they were trying to teach me
didn't help. I still say letters and numbers do not
MIX! Yet I can do most of the shop math I use in my
head most of the times. But I still check myself with
a pen and paper.
So anytime you get the kids to do things hands on I
feel it's a better way of doing things!

Just ribbing you on the behavioral matters. . . . I think it's
incredibly cool to get kids involved in boatbuilding, especially kids
like this that have probably only had frustration in a normal school
setting. With boats they see they can focus and create something of
value and beauty. You might've just changed a few lives for the better.

The Nexus June Bug is launched!
This is the boat built by a combined grades public school class. All
the students have severe behavioral problems in this group. They
worked on the JB over the last three months evey Thursday afternoon.
Then I hauled the hull back to the shop to work on the stuff we
couldn't trust tghe kids with. Circular saws, epoxy, etc.
This JB was built stitch and glue as I'm most familiar with that
method, and my carpentry skills really suck. She floats due the
great gap filling ability of thicken epoxy and FG cloth.
Only mod to the plans was framing in the bow and stern decks to
gives tons of floatation. With this group we wanted all the safety
we could get.
She was launched on a cool, gray blustery morn last Friday, 22 June
at Kingston Ontario, in the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. The coast
guard kept a watchfull eye and later gave us a tour of their cutter
and a ride in their 300 HP RIB> Best use of my tax dollars in a long
time!
Handling: Very stable, no danger of tipping as two or three kids
move around. Rows well and easily, at tad slower than my Seagull,
but a huge difference in feel. Saturday morn I roed her about three
miles through a small 6 inch chop, bucking a side wind the last
mile. Very smooth. Never spilled a drop of my coffee.
The kids had a ball, were really able to focus through most of the
project, and the boat remains the proberty of the Nexus School
Project.
Sure beats making a birdhouse.
Next years project? Perhaps another JB, and a centre modular deck
for a catamaran pickic table rowing day boat.

Yep, The NEXUS June Bug will be at the 2007 Kingston Ontario
Messabout for all to try. Details on my BrucesBoats site.
