Re: Trailerable Cruiser

Beach Cat - a bigger camp/beach cruising Bobcat. 15' 1.5" X 6' 6".

Ross Lillistone has just published a nice vignette of a couple
cruising aboard one of these. (At lest I think so - he never names
the designs in his stories, but there are usually enough clues, and
Beach cat is the only boat I know of that fits in this instance.)

Check out the boat the Mr. Higgins built in the latest copy of SCA. He
scaled up the "Bobcat to 14ft and added a cabin. Nice looking boat.

How about the JarCat? There is a J5 at 16 feet, and a J6 at 20 feet.
The designer's site ishttp://members.optusnet.com.au/~rhturner1/and
the Yahoo group ishttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/jarcats/.

-Guess it depends on where you will be cruising. How much do you want
to tow, how big of a boat you want to mess with on a trailer. If I had
cruising in semi-protected waters in mind and managable with a
trailer.. and that means all the setup and closure in mind, I would
seriously consider the standard 15ft Micro. Should handle two just
fine, is not too big, but "is" a big boat. As I am installing my side
panels on my "Old Shoe", I am amazed at just how big this little 12ft
boat is. Course, you gotta love the design and it sure grows on you.
So, the Micro, is a full keel, ballasted boat and self-righting with
flotation. Many good designs out there to choose from. Assess what
your needs are and go from there.

Best of luck to you..

Although not like Bobcat at all, Birdwatcher II is the ultimate
trailerable. I am on my way to Boulter Plywood today to get the wood
for the frames.

I am putting together an essay on trailerable boats on my web page
http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeokhsb/davidjostswebpage2/id13.htmlas I
have had 30 years of wrestling with "trailerables". Birdwatcher is the
only boat I know that really fills the bill. The thought of a post
Thanksgiving sail in the warmth and security of this boat gives me
thrills.

Well I'm a fan of the Long Micro but the lines are not a lot like
Bobcat and it is stretching the trailerable size limit if you only
have a compact tow vehicle and is not stitch and glue.

My next choice would be Michalak's Picara which is.

Since I'm building the 20' Chebacco with "Cruising Conversion," I'm prejudiced, but it seems like it meets your requirements, except for the "stitch and glue." The lapstrake construction I'm using is just one of the options and is not the most common. Panel construction is most common; e.g.

The model athttp://home.insightbb.com/~derbyrm/Chebacco.htmlgives the overall picture (scroll to the bottom). Lots more variants athttp://www.chebacco.com/

Designed for trailering, it draws 12" with the board up and the rudder is well protected by the skeg. Stealing Horses is the daysailer variant, but the pictures show the panel construction.

Subject: [bolger] Trailerable Cruiser

I have searched high and low and I cannot find a design for a
trailerable curiser that like. I built a Bobcat and love the boat,
I would like to find a design that has similiar lines, is stitch and
tape construction, sleeps two (preferably not on the floor), and is
aboput 18 feet long. A production boat that comes to mind is the
Compac 16 and plethora of 18 foot boats. Does anyone have any
recommendations?
