Re: good substitute for fir ply, rescinded

I did discover that the 61 lbs. listed on the distributor's site was a
general figure for shipping, not the weight. Aquatek is 30lbs per
1/4" 4X8 sheet. It uses Merenti. That makes it heavier than fir. The
Okoume is listed as 18 lbs per sheet.
It is amazing to me that these stats are so hard to find. I must be
looking in the wrong places.

You normally figure 25 lbs per 1/4 inch sheet of plywood plus or minus
depending on species. I find it hard to believe that a 1/4 in sheet of
plywood would weigh 61 lbs. This would be .052 lbs per cubic inch which
means it is heavier than water at .036 lbs per square inch if I did my
calculations correctly. You sure that the 61 lbs isn't for 1/2 inch or
some near metric equivalent?

That is really cool. The google search bar calculator.
6mm thick Aquatek is around 30 lbs per sheet. $33 per sheet
similar panels in Okoume are 18 lbs per sheet. $53 per sheet
I guess you get what you pay for.

In a Google search box, type: 6mm in inches and hit Return. The result
is: 6 millimeters = 0.236220472 inches ; it works for any compatible
pair of units. For instance, 6 millimeters = 6.34214046 × 10-19 lightyears.

I thought England went to the Euro.
The column headings would be useful; e.g. 6 m is probably 6 millimeters,
but, if not, then it's 236 inches.

P.S.
If the 1050/m is density, then it's 62% as heavy as Okume.

This just in from Atlantic Plywood in East Providence. These look
like great prices. It appears as if the Aquatek actually weighs less
than the Okoume. Can anyone convert the metric to lbs?

Patrick, you might want to talk to Graham Byrnes at BandB Yacht Design,
in Vandemere,NC (252 745 4293). He disigns and I think, teaches
boatbuilding and in the past I have bought very reasonably priced marine
okoume ply from him, but you would probably have to go get it, as I
don't think he ships. Clyde

I forgot to check out the weight differences. It looks like if you
build with the Aquatek you double the weight of the boat! 61 lbs? vs.
25 lbs. for Okoume BS 1088. When you add the shipping in, there is not
much difference.
Oh well, gotta try.

Dear Group,
It looks like we have a good alternative to the Marine grade A/B ply
that has degenerated into crap shoot as to whether or not it will
delaminate prior to applying paint and sheathing. Allied veneers lists
Aquatek which is a luan based, marine grade, 5 ply wood that fills the
void left behind. I will probably order up some and try it on a June
Bug. Yup, ditch the 10 hp, go with the oars, and possibly add the 40
lb electric to sneak up on those hungy bass.
